Thank you, pastor. All right, and I am so thankful. Um, so today we’re going to talk about worship and praise. This is something
01:18:38 I’ve taught many times and uh I have lots and lots of notes, but Holy Spirit is the greatest teacher. So just right now, can you just agree with me? Holy Spirit, we invite you to teach us. Teach us your ways, Lord, so that we can walk in them. Instruct us, Lord. Lord, we think we know, but you are so infinite. There is so much more of you to know, so much more about praise and about worship that we need to know to draw closer to you, to know you more clearly. We invite you, Holy Spirit, teach us today.
01:19:28 Amen. When we recognize the surpassing worthiness of God, our hearts will rise to worship him at all times and our love will express itself in powerful praise to him. Worship and praise work together. When we talk about worship, there’s a question, can we worship him however we want? Um, God defines how he is to be worshiped. And when we start getting into, well, it’s about my heart and just him, me and him, and how I’m just going to kind of this is what feels right to me. We start getting into that. That’s
01:20:22 when we start uh worshiping something else and not him. And that’s where a lot of people get off in the Bible. You’ll see it throughout. It’s like, how could these people who just were led out of all these crazy things from Egypt start worshiping this calf that they made and then all of a sudden they’re worshiping it? And sometimes we look at that and like those people who they’re so crazy. They don’t even they’re so you know but a lot of times we get to a place where we decide how we are going
01:20:55 to bring it and we forsake his word and and what he says and how he feels because this worship is about relationship and we’re going to get into that more. So there in the Old Testament there’s three words for uh worship. We’re going to do some teaching today. Are you guys okay with that? There’s some teaching that happens and then Holy Spirit’s going to do what he wants to do in and through all this stuff. So the first one, there’s really three and there’s one that’s the main, but one of the ones he used in just one
01:21:28 place, it’s in Jeremiah and it’s when they’re talking about fashioning idols and it’s actually uh called worship when they’re making these idols. And it’s this place where God is trying to draw them. they’ve kind of crept toward Egypt and so they’ve kind of gone that way and they um have said that you know they just kind of started physically moving that way then they started worshiping more that way and God is calling them back and he said hey I know that only some of you are going to hear me but I’m going to say it
01:22:02 anyway because I love you I want you to come back and many of them just said hey we think we’re doing just fine where we’re at we like we’re okay and of course they ended up reaping the uh rewards of doing it their own way, which was not good. But anyway, the the other time, the second other time is in Daniel. It’s really just because it’s a Chaldian word because that’s where he was when he wrote it and talking about um falling down in worship. But basically, there’s one word uh that is the main word uh that is uh called
01:22:37 um it’s I want to say shaka, but it’s uh it’s kind of a shaka thing. I don’t have that. But anyway, and that is what that really is. And that’s the most common way that it’s used like 172 times. And it is called to uh to bow yourself bow self low. Do we have that up there? Are we Are we good, Elizabeth? I don’t know what we have. Oh, yeah. That’s the next one, I think. Maybe. Um, so it’s to go low. It’s to fall down. Humbly beseech. And then it says obesience which is acknowledgment of another’s superiority.
01:23:15 Right? So there is an alignment thing that’s happening with worship where he is where I am. That’s a critical part of that is of worship is you are God I am not. Right? It’s kind of that simple, but it’s involved in that because a lot of times, come on, we really want to be God sometimes. We really want it to be our way. But worship is you are God. I am not. In Psalm 95:6, there we go. Thank you, Elizabeth. Oh, come let us worship. That’s that shikha word. and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker. So there are
01:24:07 these physical things that are happening but this worship is a is a heart posture thing and it’s really important in the Bible. There are uh first use is a principle in God’s word. Anytime you’re looking at any word or studying where did he say it first? That’s really important. So the first place that worship is used in the Bible in this way when he’s talking about Abraham bringing his son and sacrificing his son and Abraham said to his servant, “Stay here. We’re going to go worship.” There’s a trust there that Abraham had
01:24:58 to have because God had promised so many things that were going to come through his son that he just asked him to literally sacrifice as a burnt offering on an altar. The first instance, God didn’t say, “Go worship me.” He heard God say, “This is what I’m asking you to do. Even though I’ve given you all these promises, I said all this is going to happen. This is what I’m asking of you. Abraham knew that he needed to go worship. Sacrifice. Lay something down knowing that you are God. I am not. This word is used in reference to
01:25:47 sacrifice. to serving and relationship. It’s directly linked to serving. In Exodus 23:24, it says, “You shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them.” There’s so many scriptures where bowing down serving are together, nor as nor do as they do, but you shall utterly overthrow them and break their pillars in pieces. So this is um and then in Psalm 72:11 it says, “Yay, kings shall fall down before him and all nations shall serve him.” So this bowing down, making low and serving are tied together when the Lord is
01:26:33 talking about worship, serving one another. That’s something that is part of the DNA of this house is serving one another. It is a worship to the Lord. Worship is based on worth. There is a whole teaching that we do in our spirit in truth called about worth and um it’s something that we’re going to bring back here pretty soon and it’s going to be amazing. It is life-changing. Um, well, I think the last time we did it was 2022 maybe, but 2021. Okay. But, uh, there’s a whole thing on that. I’m not going to go into
01:27:19 all that because there’s a lot we got to get through today. But, um, worship is based on worth, glory. Creatures are not worthy. So in uh in Romans it says, “Claiming to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore, God gave them up to the lust of their hearts to impurity, to dishonoring their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and they worshiped and served the
01:27:59 creature rather than the creator who is blessed forever. That’s interesting that we are exchanging truth for a lie. Whenever our worship uh when we put that worth on something other than him, God alone is worthy. In Luke when Jesus is being tempted says, “And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time and said to him, to you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will if you then will worship me,
01:28:46 and it will all be yours.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.” Again, worship and serving together. He is worthy of our service. He is worthy of the sacrifice. So sacrifice, giving something you value for the sake of something else regarded as more important or worthy. Sacrifice. It’s just giving up something that has value for something that regard as more important or more valuable, more worthy. He is worthy of our submission, the
01:29:47 bowing down. There’s a surrender there. There is an obedience there in that worship. He is worthy of our trust. Like I mentioned with Abraham in that first use, there was a trust in that worship. That trust comes with relationship. If we’re having a hard time saying, “God, you are God. I am not.” Yes. My yes is yours. If we’re having a hard time with that, there is an understanding of him that we’re missing. There is a there is an understanding of relationship that needs to develop even more. And so, if you’re
01:30:33 in a place where I’m saying these things to you and you’re just like, I cannot see that. I’m not I don’t think I I’m not there. This is an opport an invitation to draw closer to him. This is an invitation to know him more. My heart’s cry is Lord, I want to know you as I am known of you. He knows a lot. It’s going to take me a while, but man, I’m loving that journey to know him like he knows me. What you worship, you are joined to relationship. In Hosea, he was talking about Ephraim. And he said Ephraim is
01:31:25 joined to idols. So just leave him alone. He’s not there yet. In first Corinthians uh it says but he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Worship has a the deepest part of me to the deepest part of you part to it. Uh so in real reli uh talking about relationship worship in the Bible many times uh when the children of Israel or people are worshiping idols it’s he calls that spiritual adultery right because it’s about relationship he’s always putting it in that context when God talked about Israel going after
01:32:15 other gods and worshiping them he spoke about it in terms of marriage and infidelity He even have the prophet Hosea whom we were talking about demonstrate that with his life and you can go read Hosea to know more about that. But um he’s always talking about that in the context of relationship in that word uh that is used. Okay, we’ll get there. Says it talks about bowing before him. There was a trust. If you are bowing before someone, there’s a certain amount of trust you need to have in that person
01:32:58 because you are in a vulnerable place when you do that before someone bowing. Again, trust our lives in worship to be a living sacrifice our whole life. In Romans 12 it says one it says I appeal to you therefore brothers by the mercies of God to present your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God which is your spiritual worship. In verse two it goes on to talk about a transformation that needs to happen. When I’m talking about worship, I always think about an alignment thing. That’s
01:33:47 how I think of it. Coming into a correct alignment with who he is and who I am in relation to him. I am I am a son. I am a daughter. We talked about that. But he is God and I am not. But I am aligning myself with him, with his truth, with the truth of who God is. I’m I’m putting away the lies that say that I’m something other than or something that can’t quite be ever be in alignment with him. I’m putting those lies away and I’m bringing myself into alignment with who I am in Christ and who he is. So there
01:34:28 is this alignment that needs to happen. Worship isn’t happening if something isn’t changing. Something needs to change in my posture and how I see him and how I relate to him. Something needs to change when I worship him because when I worship that I’m drawing closer to him. I’m knowing him more. I’m seeing more clearly. I’m getting into better alignment with him. Every time I am worshiping him, I’m coming into better alignment with him because I understand him better. It’s about a lifestyle of
01:35:04 correct position before a sovereign, limitless, all powerful, all- knowing, allloving God. This encompasses everything that we do and everything that we are. We are created to worship. You were created to worship. So, what will you worship? You’re going to worship something. Pastor Liz has a great quote that says, “What you love, you will worship.” Just let kind of the Pastor Liz thing sink in for a minute there. So, we’re talking about praise and worship. Worship and praise, they are different, but a lot of us times we
01:36:02 don’t really understand maybe what the difference is. A lot of times we think maybe they’re the same thing or praise means a fast song, worship means a slow song or worship is just a higher level of praise and we’ve kind of gone a whole another level if we’re worshiping, right? But we need to understand the difference and the importance. It’s really important because sometimes we might undervalue praise today. Thank you, Jerei. We talked a the whole thing was about praise and what we were saying
01:36:33 and it’s really important and if we refer to praise as some kind of lower form of worship, we are robbing it of its power. So the world can define praise as just a a warm approval or an admiration or expressing respect, gratitude uh especially like in song. And these are based on a Latin word which means prize which is not what the Bible’s talking about. So they’re really saying praise is to prize or to set a price or value which doesn’t sound bad, right? because we’re just talking about that in worship
01:37:12 about his worth. But there are many times where we’re tying it to uh the value of what we think we got out of something, right? The value of what we think we have or we’re we’re we’re able where we’re at right now where praise becomes this you do this for me, I will do this for you exchange of things. And now we’ve completely lost what praise is in that. Okay. Um, and there are times when maybe we come in and it’s like a song starts and our thought is it’s like, did any can I count any good things that happened this
01:37:51 week? And that’s going to be the level I’m going to participate in. And if we’re honest, sometimes we come in feeling that way. And that’s how we kind of come in. It was a great week. I’m in the front and now my hands are up, right? or it’s just like I just just be happy I showed up today. I’m just going to occupy this seat and we’re just going to call it good. That’s going to be the exchange we’re making today cuz I didn’t feel like we got much. But I’m telling you, there was a worship that happened when you
01:38:27 came in and sat in that seat. We’re like, what? because you realized his worth. So when we’re talking about praise and worship, we kind of mix them up. But I’m telling you, if nothing good happened this week and you said, “All I got is sitting in the back row.” I’m telling you, you worshiped him today. And someone jumping up and down in the front row cuz they’re happy is not the same thing. And they are not uh putting that same worth in the same way as you did by coming in the doors because you said you’re
01:39:18 God. I am not. I’m going to come in the door because you’re worth it. Nothing good happened. I don’t know what’s up from down, but I’m coming in. I’m telling you, that’s worship. Don’t disregard that. All right. I can’t see. Okay. Worship is an inward posture of the heart. Believers are the ones who get to worship because there’s a relationship involved there. Praise is outward. It’s physical, visual, and it’s very visible to the whole world. It’s important to know the difference. You can’t praise him in your
01:40:33 heart. You’re you can worship him there, but praise is outward. It’s an expression from here, but it’s outside. It’s out there. So when we’re talking about praise, the first word in the Hebrew is yada. All right? That is to hold out the hands, to throw them out. So I throw up my hands to praise you again and again. That’s the truth of God’s word. Yada also in that is to make a confession. There’s a confessing with our mouth. Again, interesting. We’re bringing in alignment there. So, it can indicate power,
01:41:33 direction. some of the scriptures in 2 Samuel 22:50 it says therefore I will yada give thanks to you oh Lord among the nations I will sing praises to your name 1st Chronicles 16:3434 oh give thanks yada to the Lord for he is good for his mercies endure forever the Lord is my strength Psalm 28:7 my heart trusts in him and I am helped in him therefore my heart greatly rejoices says, “And with my song I will confess, yada, praise him.” Again, there’s an action involved. The next word, halal. You can see it
01:42:18 there. To boast, right? So, that is also to be mad, foolish, wildly to it’s a also a clear sound, but a lot of times color, clear color to shine. Hence to make, to show, to boast, to rave, to celebrate. That’s actually I said halal. It’s actually hail. It’s more like if I was from our Pembroke church, it’d be a little easier for me to say it. Uh I say our Pembroke church, they’re like my brothers and sisters. It’s I feel like I’m a part of them. They’re like a part of this church and we’re a part of them. I love you.
01:43:04 So we see that used uh obviously with David bringing in the ark and he’s dancing. He is praising before the Lord. This is the ho, right? And he’s like and of course we know this story about his wife Michael getting all upset. It’s like whoa that’s a little too crazy maybe. It’s like I don’t know about that. And he’s like man I’ll even look more like a fool for him because he’s worthy. He’s worthy to be praised. It can look a little unruly, a little foolish. Obviously, hallel hua hal hallelujah, right? Praise ye the
01:43:47 Lord. So, anytime we’re saying that, it’s interesting. We have the the old song, hallelu, hallelu. It’s great song. I’m not saying it’s bad. I’m just saying we’re talking about celebrating and getting a little get let’s get a little nuts, right? And we’re just like, “Yes, I’m totally getting nuts right now singing this song.” Oh, it’s so funny. We are not here to get super religious and put every little verse and song in a box today. That is not what we’re doing, right? This is so important to understand we aren’t just singing a
01:44:26 song. We’re not just having a great time together. Something is happening. There’s a spiritual thing going on when we praise. When we offer up praise to him, when we actually worship and bring ourselves by bring ourselves into alignment with him, there’s something that’s happening spiritually. So, Shiv is the is uh the next one. Did I even have Yes, I had it on there. Yeah, that’s totally the word. It’s to be loud. To be loud. I was definitely doing some loud stuff today when we were praising. It was just
01:45:07 coming out of me. I couldn’t help it. It was I could I wanted to praise. It’s not I can’t help myself, right? It was just I needed to address loudly the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. That is worship, right? Because in Psalm 63:33 it says, “Because of your loving because your loving kindness is better than life, my lips will shak I will loudly address. I will loudly say I will boast of the Lord. I will not be ashamed to loudly proclaim you and praise you.” The next one is one maybe we’re most
01:45:56 familiar with. Zamar, right? To touch the strings or part of a musical instrument. Thank you Bob Barnes for showing us that today. Of course, everybody else. Play upon it to make music accompanied by the voice. Hence to celebrate in song and in music. In music to give praise, sing forth praise. Psalms. Shout joyfully to God all the earth. Sing Zamar the glory of his name. Make his praise glorious. So if we go to the New Testament. All right. We’re going to the Greek. Everybody staying with me? We’re
01:46:38 good. Okay. We have anos which is a story. A story is praise to the Lord. can be praised to the Lord. Uh so in other forms there’s other forms of laudation public praise. Publicly right again public in public praise is supposed to be seen not just in the eight walls but outside of that publicly. Uh ho is a hymn right? We hear that a a religious ode by implication to celebrate God in song. So it could be also a poem set to music. In Hebrews uh 12 uh 2:12 it says Jesus is not ashamed to call them his
01:47:37 brothers for he said I will declare your name to my brethren in the midst of the congregation. I will sing praise to you. Interesting. That was Jesus. Ephesians 5:19, speak to one another in psalms and hymns in these and spiritual songs offering praise by singing, making melody with your heart to the Lord. Another one, solo. Again, that’s like the Zamar where it’s playing instruments, right? We’re twanging, touching the strings. And 1 Corinthians 14:15, it says, “I will pray with the spirit and I
01:48:11 will pray with my mind also. I will sing with the spirit but I will sing with my mind also. This example he says I will sing with the spirit. Our spirit is using our body like an instrument. The other one uh eulogo like eulogy if you will to speak well of or to bless. We talked about blessing the Lord. Uh this isn’t like he sneezed and I say bless you and I he needs me to bless him, right? That’s not what we’re talking about. Okay. This is in the context of praise. Thank you, Lord. I’m thanking you for who you are. We talked
01:48:52 about thanking him today. That’s blessing the Lord. Bless the Lord at all times. His praise will continually be in my mouth. Right? I’m going to thank the Lord. I’m going to thank the Lord at all times. So, the power of praise, he is enthroned on the praises of his people. We talked about that his habit, the habitation of God is in the praises of his people. Praise opens the gates. There’s an entrance into his presence with praise. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name.
01:49:35 Thank him. Praise breaks chains and dark circumstances. When we together praise him and he is enthroned on the praises. A throne is where a king sits and he can execute judgment not on you. That’s not what we’re talking about on the his enemies those unseen forces powers and principalities. He’s executing that. That’s where when Jere was talking about there’s deliverance day we had enthroned him on the praises. He’s there to bring deliverance. He’s there to save. He’s there to rescue. He’s there to deliver
01:50:12 in all that he is. And we’ve made that place, that throne. It’s like, Lord, you are here. We are here. You are on the throne. You are the king of kings. Do as you will as the king. Now when we talk about this about breaking chains and we we can be praising just ourselves but this isn’t like if I do this thing then he has to do this thing. We we don’t manipulate him into doing something for us, right? Our focus is praising him, enthroning him, thanking him, giving him glory, playing on instruments, singing loudly,
01:50:55 doing these things to praise him, exalt him, lift him up, right? And then he does those things. He’s that’s because he is faithful to do them. There’s not a uh if I wave the banner harder or if I sweat more or jump higher then it’ll happen. That’s not how that works, right? Because then we’re getting into then really it’s us who did it and it has almost almost nothing to do with him. He’s just this being that does what we tell him to do, right? Now we’re way out of whack, right? Kind of missed the
01:51:29 whole thing. Praise goes handinhand, like I said, with that judgment. Let the godly exalt the Lord. Let them sing for joy on their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their mouths and the two-edged sword in their hands to execute vengeance on the nations and punishments on the people. To bind their kings with chains and their nobles with feathers of iron, to execute on them the judgment written dishonor. Uh have all his saints, all his godly ones. Praise the Lord. That’s in Psalm 14849 149. So we I want to talk about
01:52:10 expressions of praise a little bit. So expressions we’re talking about how do we express praise? There are actions which is extending our hands, right? Kneeling, dancing. These are actions that express praise. Also there is the sight aspect. There’s color. They’re shining. We have a lot of uh banners over there. There needs to be something clear when we’re doing that. Uh because that word ho was talking about a clear sound or a clear color, a clear brightness. Uh we have a little thing over there on the side of the pillar
01:52:50 that actually says what each one of those is, what those mean, what they’re for. I want to challenge you if the Lord if that’s something that you do or the Lord is challenging you with to partner with Holy Spirit. Say holy spirit what are is the expression that is going forth. There are several people who have who understand that there is actually prophetic things that can happen through that expression. Meg you know that well. She’s someone who’s when she hears the Lord there’s this expression and it’s a
01:53:21 prophetic thing. It’s like, hey, the Lord is saying something right now very clearly. And it’s it’s awesome. Also, of course, sound, right? We’re talking about singing hymns, choirs, all those things. Confession, confessing, blessing, which is that thanksgiving. Vocally, clapping, right? We did some clapping today. uh addressing loudly like we talked about, poetry, playing instruments often accompanied by the voice. Again, I want you to know these are all part of the expression of praise because praise is
01:53:59 an outward expression. Storytelling is can be praise spiritual songs. So all these things are these praise also in that concept of rejoicing right and the clamorously foolishly just going for it right let’s get nuts right we’re praising him and there’s fame making his name famous right there’s the fame of him and that’s declaring that means it has to be out in public right when we’re doing that and of course celebrating and thanksgiving Where are we at? So, let’s just contrast a little bit praise and
01:54:50 worship. So, worship always involves making oneself low either literally or figuratively. Uh it can be expressed through almost any activity, right? because it’s a posture of the heart. Whether we’re working, whether we’re serving, whatever we’re doing, we can be in a place of worshiping him through that. It can be expressed silently. It can be expressed loudly, seen or unseen. So, we’re talking about worship. And it must be sourced in relationship. Always involves the connection between us and God. spirit to
01:55:35 spirit. Praise on the other hand involves specific activities that the Bible talks about and it talks about a lot of activities. But again you have singing, dancing, the clapping, the shouting, storytelling and it’s always seen and or heard always. It’s a physical manif manifestation of sight and sound. You can you uh you cannot express the praise just inside of you. It’s got to be on the outside. But praise doesn’t technically require that same relationship that worship does because the Lord talks
01:56:18 about uh the fields praising him, right? The trees praising him. The rocks are going to cry out, right? Is what Jesus said into praise. If you’re not going to do it, the rocks are going to do it. The rocks do not have an intimate relationship with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. That’s not worship. That’s praise. So, we talked about making him famous. I could be up here and I could talk about someone who’s famous. So, in in baseball, there’s a guy who since passed named Tony Gwyn, played for the
01:56:55 Padres’s, one of the most amazing uh people play who’ve ever has ever played baseball. I could stand up here and talk about how awesome he was, what an incredible man, and how he just did things right and all this. I can come up. I’ve never I never met that guy in my life. I’ve never had a conversation with him. I don’t know him know him. I know about him. And I can sit here and make some and maybe even make somebody a fan of this guy who’s not even live anymore by how I talk about him. Say them get
01:57:27 all excited like, “Man, that’s cool. That’s so awesome. I don’t know him, but I was just praising him, wasn’t I? Relationship changes. If I had my mom standing up here and another person that has maybe even known me for a while and you talked to each one of them, you’d probably figure out which one was my mom by how she talked about me. Why? One, she birthed me and she’s in relationship with me. She knows me knows me, right? There’s a difference when praise comes from that place of knowing. So, I
01:58:12 don’t want to discount that, but you need to know that you can come into this house and jump around and do amazing things and back flips or just raise your hands. You can do all the praise things and not be in relationship. So don’t confuse the person who’s worshiping him because they dragged their heiney into the back row and are just sitting there with the person who’s up here raising their hands and singing really loud praising you. Uh we can’t see the heart the relationship. You can’t tell, oh
01:58:50 this person has a relationship, that person doesn’t. You we don’t that’s not our purview. We don’t see that praise does not require that relationship. I can talk to you about Jesus all day long and not have said a word to him in 10 years. Yeah. But I’m telling you, if I am in communion with him and I am expressing, if I am making him famous to you, if I am uh testifying, if I am confessing, if I am thanking him and I’m telling you about him, something’s going to change in you because you heard about it and
01:59:30 from someone who’s in relationship with him. So praise is definitely more horizontal in nature because it’s outward. It we are people who see and we respond to sight and sound. It’s specifically designed that way, right? Praise is something we can give freely, but worship is going to cost you something. The first use Abraham said, “We’re gonna go worship.” He didn’t know at that moment that God was gonna stop his hand. He just knew you’re God. I’m not. You’re You said promises that were going to happen through him and you’re
02:00:17 asking me to sacrifice him. But I’m in relationship with you. I’m coming into agreement and alignment with you and your purposes. I’m going to worship even though it’s going to cost me the promise that you gave me. I’m going to worship. Praise is definitely more horizontal while worship is typically more vertical in nature, right? It doesn’t even have to be visible. There’s people, right, that see it. Uh worship is for him and him alone. We can worship together. We can all be in the same room. Some of us worshiping,
02:01:01 some of us not. But again, we’re doing this together. We enthrone him on praises. But that worship is spirit to spirit. That relationship aspect, that alignment of me in relation to you, of who I am and understanding that more clearly every day and who you are and trying to understand that more clearly every day. Praise and worship can work together. They can uh each one uh accomplishing something different. Worship making us low praise exalting him. Psalm 66:4 says in the amplified, “All the earth will bow down to worship
02:01:44 you in submissive wonder, and I will sing praises to you. They will praise your name in song.” In Psalm 138 1-2 it says, “I will praise Yadah. I will praise you Lord with my whole heart before the gods. I will sing praises Zamar to you. I will worship toward your holy temple and praise your name for your loving kindness and your truth for you have magnified your word above your name.” If you want to understand how to worship him more perfectly, how to praise him in truth, how to worship him in truth. I am
02:02:34 telling you the word, the word, the word. He will clearly show you. He will clearly show you himself and show you how he is to be praised. You know, this whole thing is about we’re talking about the overcoming church. The overcoming church is a praising church. The overcoming church is a church that worships him in spirit and in truth. The praising church enthrones the king of kings and lord of lords. The overcoming church is made up of believers who will whose honor it is to execute the judgments of God or on the enemies of
02:03:20 God. The overcoming church lifts up their hands and lifts up their voice. The overcoming church is not afraid to be loud, and is not afraid to declare in public who God is, the great things he has done, and what he will do. Family of God, we are the overcoming church. It is our honor to be able to worship him in spirit and in truth. It is our honor to be able to praise him out of a place of relationship and understanding him. It is our honor to express that to whoever will hear. Just as we heard today, there
02:04:11 are people who need to hear that there is an overcoming. You can overcome. You don’t have to just white knuckle through things. There is an overcoming for you. And I know the king who sits on the throne. And we can together in relationship with him execute judgment on those things that are coming at you. People of God, let’s praise the Lord. Let us worship him. Let us bow down. Let us lift up holy hands and praise his name. Hallelujah. [Applause] Amen. Thank you, Josh. I’m just uh I love the word being
02:05:08 broken down like this so we can understand what God is giving to us and what we get to be a part of. And so I just I thank you for this, Josh. I thank you for leading our worship uh uh ministry uh along with a few others to bring truth, so we can walk in life. So, Father, we thank you for this word. We thank you, Father God, that you are stirring us up so that we can worship in spirit and in truth. So that we can be a part of your overcoming church. so that we can walk knowing you, God, and seeing
02:05:45 your name glorified in all that we do today. Lord, we praise you with our hands lifted up, God. We worship you because you have rescued us, Lord, and we know your great mercy, Father. Help us to bring this faith, to bring your love everywhere we go, Father. Bless everyone here. We thank you for this time in Jesus name. Amen. Amen. Church, we’re going to go to fellowship and we’re inviting again everybody that is willing to join us to come on over. We got food if you don’t have any. All right, see you over there.
Worship: A Posture of the Heart
Worship begins in the heart. It is deeply personal and rooted in relationship. Josh reminds us that only believers can truly worship, because worship flows from spirit-to-spirit connection—an alignment of our inner being with God’s truth and presence. It’s not about music, stage lights, or emotions. Worship is about making oneself low, surrendering, and recognizing God’s worth above all.
“You can express worship through serving, working, or even sitting in silence,” Josh says. “It doesn’t have to be loud or visible, but it must be real and relational.”
Praise: A Visible, Audible Expression
In contrast, praise is outward and expressive. It involves physical actions—lifting hands, singing, dancing, clapping—and is designed to be seen and heard. While worship is often private and internal, praise is public and contagious, declaring the greatness of God to the world around us.
“You can’t praise God silently,” Josh emphasizes. “You can worship silently, but praise has to be expressed.”
Biblical Word Study: Praise in Hebrew and Greek
Josh takes us on a word-rich journey through Scripture, exploring several original language terms that unpack the dimensions of praise:
- Yadah – To extend the hands and give thanks (e.g., Psalm 28:7)
- Halal – To boast, rave, or celebrate with abandon (root of hallelujah)
- Shabach – To shout loudly and triumphantly (Psalm 63)
- Zamar – To praise with instruments and song (Psalm 66)
- Eulogeo – To bless or speak well of God (as in a eulogy)
- Anos and Humnos (Greek) – Songs and stories of praise
- Psalmos and Psallo – Singing and playing with instruments
These terms show us that praise isn’t limited to a song list—it’s a full-body, multi-sensory expression of honor and celebration.
Why Praise Matters
Praise is not just about enthusiasm; it is spiritual warfare. Josh teaches that when we enthrone God on our praises, He takes His rightful place as King—and He acts on our behalf. Chains break, darkness flees, and deliverance comes not because we manipulate God, but because we align with who He is.
“We don’t praise to get something,” Josh says. “We praise because He is worthy, and in His faithfulness, He moves.”
Praise and Worship in Harmony
While praise and worship are different, they are not opposed. Worship draws us close to God’s heart; praise declares His goodness to the world. One humbles, the other exalts. Josh illustrates that the church needs both to be the overcoming Church—one that knows God intimately and proclaims Him boldly.
Expressions of Praise and Worship
Josh highlights that expression matters. Scripture invites us to worship and praise with clarity and intentionality—through instruments, banners, singing, dancing, storytelling, and even visual art. These aren’t distractions; they’re biblical expressions of our love for God.
“You don’t need to be a great musician,” he says. “You just need to be willing to give God an honest, outward expression of what He’s done in you.”
The Overcoming Church
Josh closes with a powerful call to the Church: “We are the overcoming Church.” Not because of strength, strategy, or charisma—but because we enthrone Jesus through worship and praise. When we lift Him high, He comes low, and lives are changed.
“Let us bow down. Let us lift up holy hands and praise His name. Hallelujah.”
Discussion Guide
In this message, Josh Milbourn breaks down the biblical meanings of praise and worship, emphasizing their distinctions and divine purposes. Worship is an inward posture of reverence, born from relationship with God and often expressed in quiet surrender. Praise, on the other hand, is outward, visible, and vocal, manifesting in actions like singing, clapping, dancing, and shouting. Through Hebrew and Greek word studies, Josh explains that praise isn’t optional or stylistic—it’s a biblical command and a spiritual weapon that enthrones God and releases breakthrough. He reminds us that worship is costly and relational, while praise is declarative and public. Both are essential for the Church to walk in victory as an overcoming, truth-filled, God-centered body.

Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for teaching us how to worship You in spirit and in truth. We desire to praise You boldly, not just with our words, but with our whole lives. Help us to make You famous, to lift up Your name in public and in private, and to enthrone You on our praises. Stir in us a deeper understanding of worship, and teach us to offer You the kind of praise that moves heaven and changes earth. May we be a people who worship from relationship and praise from revelation. In Jesus’ name, amen.
