Anastasia Durgin shares a powerful message about how God brings life out of pain. Using the imagery of ashes and sequoia trees, she explains that hardships and mourning are not meaningless—they are often the very places where God produces new life. We are deeply connected to one another, and our lives are meant to bring life to others. Even in suffering, God is present, and healing comes when we are honest before Him.

Hi.

00:00:15:16 – 00:00:24:10
Unknown
So I’m going to stay here and I’m going to preach about life and death.

00:00:24:12 – 00:00:51:05
Unknown
Okay. So we’ve all lost somebody. Whether it be a friend, a family member, or a pet. And you, if you haven’t. We’ve all been through times that have made us think that life is just too difficult to go on. Well, I’ve been having some of those times recently, and I was going into doing a Bible study, and I came across a very interesting topic in the Bible morning.

00:00:51:07 – 00:01:05:27
Unknown
Just in case you don’t know exactly what I’m talking about in the Bible. When people are mourning, they put ashes on their head. And I found this very strange. Why would people put ashes on their head? What did it mean?

00:01:05:29 – 00:01:29:15
Unknown
The word ashes means worthlessness and immense mourning in this context. I found it interesting that the only places you see ashes are in places where fire and devastation has been. Where something that once lived is now dead and returned back to the dust from which God made it. At first ash seems worthless, like a reminder of what death the fire caused.

00:01:29:17 – 00:02:02:13
Unknown
But God make something worthless. Be the start of new life. This is how mourning is. You never get what is lost back. But their death was not wasted through their death. Life was caused and they aren’t ever really lost because they’re a part of everyone and everything that comes after them. Even if they don’t know it. Now, this might seem off topic, but has anyone ever been to big trees?

00:02:02:15 – 00:02:26:26
Unknown
In case you happen to big Trees is a state park that has the largest trees in the world. Giant sequoia trees. These ginormous trees come from a seed tinier than your fingertip. These seeds are protected by a cone and can live up to 20 years before being dropped. Yet they only. The only way these seeds can be dropped is by fire.

00:02:26:28 – 00:02:59:09
Unknown
Without. Without it, seeds are trapped in the cone until they die. Fire not only allows the seeds to fall, but it also prepares the ground for them. The ground is full of nutrients and life from the ashes of fallen trees. Although it does not look at that, that tree’s life is never gone and becomes a part of all the seeds that sprout from its death.

00:02:59:12 – 00:03:27:07
Unknown
The fire that creates ash is much like the afflictions in our life. Affliction means hardships, trials, state of severe pain, distress, grief, misery and suffering. This is how this is sometimes how our lives are. We constantly are scorched by fire and pain. And it’s just a part of life. But Hebrews 1229 says that our God is consuming fire.

00:03:27:10 – 00:03:48:16
Unknown
Now, I’m not trying to say that God is the cause of your afflictions because he’s not. But God is the same is in the same flame that holds your affliction. Sometimes he allows the fire to reach you. And I don’t know why, but I do know that God is there through the afflictions. And the closer he is, the more you get burnt.

00:03:48:19 – 00:03:56:05
Unknown
Sometimes God allows us to go through fire so that we can produce life.

00:03:56:07 – 00:04:31:11
Unknown
God never promised us that we weren’t going to get burnt. In fact, people that get burnt the most are usually good people. The biggest, tallest, most beautiful trees and God promises to be there in the fire with us. Peter or first Peter 412 313 says, beloved, do not think it’s strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you as though something strange, something some strange thing has happened to you.

00:04:31:14 – 00:04:55:03
Unknown
But rejoice, and it’s an extent that you partake in Christ’s sufferings, that when his glory is received, you may also be glad and with exceeding joy. This verse is calling us to be glad of heart in the midst of affliction. During this Bible study, I came to know exactly what God means when he says to have a glad heart.

00:04:55:06 – 00:04:57:22
Unknown
Glad.

00:04:57:24 – 00:05:20:21
Unknown
Of heart doesn’t doesn’t only mean joyful, Marian glad, but also means to have understanding soul in the midst of things. So he is really calling us to be glad in him, because he holds our heart and knows our pain. Only God knows the horrible thoughts that haunt your mind, and he is the only one that can chase those thoughts away.

00:05:20:24 – 00:05:41:11
Unknown
In high school, you hear a lot of horrible things. Some of those things are kids talking about how much they want to die and it’s not fair because death, the enemy, wants to cut their life short and wants to stop them from creating more life, and it wants to stop them from making seeds before they even start to grow.

00:05:41:13 – 00:06:11:14
Unknown
Now, here’s another interesting fact. Giant sequoia trees roots are only about 6 to 12in deep. They don’t go that deep, but they spread out, making a root system that spreads 60 to 100ft in all directions, intertwining its roots with other sequoias so that when one is struggling to get nutrients, the other trees give whatever nutrients they can to that tree, helping it survive.

00:06:11:17 – 00:06:44:28
Unknown
But when one of those trees dies, all the sequoias can feel it. When? Well, now you’re probably wondering why I’m still talking about trees. Well, the point is that our life isn’t ours. And I know that’s a pretty difficult point to talk about. So I’ll say in tree form first. So if a tree dies and the other trees grow from it, they still carry the nutrients or life of that of the millions of trees that have gone before it.

00:06:45:00 – 00:07:11:18
Unknown
Because life can’t be, can’t be lost even by death. And the air we breathe is like it’s the same air that our ancestors and all living things have breathed. So now is this next breath yours? No, it’s the breath and life of every living thing that goes before you. And every living thing that goes after you. It’s the same breath that God.

00:07:11:20 – 00:07:38:23
Unknown
The first came from God when he breathed life into the dust and made it so that we can continue to breathe the same breath of God for as long as we live. Isaiah 42 five says, this is what God the Lord says, the creator of the heavens. Created the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth and all that comes out from it.

00:07:38:26 – 00:07:43:17
Unknown
Who’s who gives birth to its people.

00:07:43:20 – 00:08:17:29
Unknown
And life to those who walk in it, on it. And if that’s what on earth and I don’t know what is. Our life isn’t just a part of our ancestors. It’s also a part of those who haven’t been born yet. Maybe we won’t even get to meet the person who carries our life with them. But the point is that our life is like trees, not measured by how tall you grow or how beautiful you are, or even by how long you live, but by the amount of trees you give life to along the way.

00:08:18:02 – 00:08:32:27
Unknown
That is what is why we live for God and to give life to others. With the time God gives us and to trust him in the fires, and to trust that he will give you whatever you need.

00:08:33:00 – 00:09:12:27

Isaiah 41 or 61 323 therefore says, The Spirit of the Lord is upon them, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and the. And the opening of the prison to those who are bound to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn.

To counsel those who who mourn in Zion. To give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning. The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. And they that they may be called trees of righteousness. The planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified and give.

00:09:54:00 – 00:10:02:08

Can I see these notes for a quick. Everyone give a hand to Anastasia.

00:10:02:11 – 00:10:05:10
Unknown
All right.

00:10:05:12 – 00:10:27:01
Unknown
So I don’t know if you heard, like, the silence while you’re while you’re preaching. Because that’s what you. Because you were saying things that were very profound and you’re saying things that I’ve even been praying to God for answers about, that he just gave revelation in this time. So, I just want us to be very, aware of the gift of the Lord that’s in Anastasia.

00:10:27:03 – 00:10:41:13
Unknown
Continue to pray for her. Do you mind if I could borrow this for for, like, two more minutes while you go are done. I’ll get back to you after. Okay? It’s good. Yeah.

00:10:41:16 – 00:10:52:16
Unknown
All right. I just want to. I know it’s 1130. We want to get out early, but I don’t know. I want to say I want to read some of this again.

00:10:52:18 – 00:11:15:12
Unknown
Because we’re like, oh, that was good. That was, you know. Yeah. At least it could be easy to blow over it. But I’m not like trying to just re preach it, but just to show you, like we need to hear this word. Okay. Let me just say this. Let me just read through this. Okay. I’ll read it.

00:11:15:14 – 00:11:35:05
Unknown
I’m trying to listen to God here. Okay. We have all lost someone, whether it be a friend, a family member, or a pet. And even if you haven’t, we’ve all been through times that make us think that life is just too difficult to go on. I’ve been having some of those times recently. Me too. And as I was doing a Bible study, I came across a very interesting topic in the Bible morning.

00:11:35:08 – 00:12:03:24

Just in case you don’t know exactly what I’m talking about in the Bible, when people are mourning, they put ashes on their head. I found this very strange. Why would they put ashes on their head? What did it mean? The word ashes means worthlessness and immense mourning in this context. I found it interesting that the only places you see ashes are in places where fire and devastation has been, where something that once lived is now dead and has returned back to the dust from which God made it.

00:12:03:27 – 00:12:27:27

At first ash seems worthless, like a reminder of what death the fire has caused. But God makes something worthless to be the start of new life. This is how mourning is. You never get what was lost back. But their death was not wasted. Through their death, life was caused. And they aren’t ever really lost because they are a part of everyone and everything that comes after them, even if they don’t know it.

00:12:27:29 – 00:12:57:00
Unknown
And do you understand that humanity is connected as a body? Do you understand that I’m not who I am apart from my mom, my dad, my sisters, this church, I would have no identity. We are a corporate humanity. God sees this church as unified. When one member suffers, the others suffer. When one contributes, everybody gains. When one is lost, everybody suffers.

00:12:57:01 – 00:13:26:05
Unknown
Everybody grieves. The Lord grieves. Jesus wept. Jesus mourned because he’s connected to the ones, that are that are briefly separated from us. And we know that through the resurrection will be reunited. God will raise up those in Christ on the last day. We will not. Those ashes will only contribute to a greater forest, a greater tree, a greater reality.

00:13:26:07 – 00:13:48:24
Unknown
We won’t just get the humanity back that was lost and went to the ashes. We will get a glorified humanity in the image of Jesus Christ. We won’t have a seed. Those sequoia seeds. The fire hits them. It cracks them open. They penetrate down into the soil and between the other roots. You don’t just get another seed that comes up, you get a sequoia.

00:13:48:26 – 00:14:19:09
Unknown
You get a forest of sequoias that are interwoven and interlaced. This is the nature of who you are as a person. You can’t live without other people. I can’t live without you guys. It does not work. And your suffering, if it’s in Christ, is never wasted. It contributes to my growth. My suffering is not wasted in Christ. It contributes to your growth.

00:14:19:11 – 00:14:47:24
Unknown
God is forging and purifying us in his fire. His fire is not a punishment. It brings forth that sequoia. It brings forth the glory of God. This is a New Testament teaching. It’s hard to sit in the fire and let it crack you open the seed before it cracks open is not growing. It’s just suffering. If the seed cracks open, it begins to multiply.

00:14:47:25 – 00:15:13:22
Unknown
It begins to grow. So if you’re suffering, crack open. Allow the fire in. Allow the Lord to search. Mourn. Mourn. What’s happening? That’s how you let the fire in. It’s easy to to wall it out and to distract yourself and to become a workaholic. And you never get the fire in.

00:15:13:24 – 00:15:45:27
Unknown
But if you’re willing to crack open and mourn like Jeremiah in Lamentations, like Jesus at the tomb of Lazarus, you’re able to actually crack open and mourn. The Lord says. My compassions fail not. My mercies are renewed every morning. Great is my faithfulness. I will not cast off forever. This is lamentations 321 through 27. If you want to go look that up, God is faithful to those who mourn.

00:15:46:00 – 00:16:14:03
Unknown
Pastor David last week said, blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Those that don’t mourn, there’s no promise of that. If you’re not honest with God, if I’m not honest with him, if I don’t crack open, there’s no promise of my healing. But if I mourn the God of all, grace will certainly comfort me. Do you see the revelation that’s in this?

00:16:14:06 – 00:16:40:07
Unknown
We’re not alone. We’re part of a body. We’re connected. The people around us, even in this world, even the people that disagree with us, even the people that we’d be tempted to hate and call an enemy. They’re connected. They help define us. We help define them. Which direction is the influence going? Are we influencing them, or are we being influenced?

00:16:40:10 – 00:17:00:19
Unknown
Okay, this is the challenge to see us as not divorced from the people around us. Even the person on the street, the least of these. Jesus says, if you gave him a cup of cold water, you gave that to me. I’m in them. You’re in me. I’m in you. This is so hard for me to get it. I don’t know if I’m the only one.

00:17:00:21 – 00:17:09:00
Unknown
Anastasia just shared something that I think you know. You can crack open this revelation for us.

00:17:09:02 – 00:17:28:29
Unknown
Man, I’m going to see if John will email this out to everybody. We need to meditate on this. I need to meditate on it. I know I haven’t digested this all. This is my initial, you know, reaction to this, but I didn’t want it to just be another thing that somebody read because there’s brilliance here. There’s revelation here.

00:17:29:02 – 00:17:38:22
Unknown
There’s there’s love to the body of Christ here.

00:17:38:25 – 00:17:46:15
Unknown
Our life isn’t just a part of our ancestors. It’s also a part of those who haven’t been born yet.

00:17:46:18 – 00:18:13:25
Unknown
My God. You know, your parents that have passed away or the people close to you. You do. You do carry on their legacy. You do represent them. And there will be those that follow you, that represent you. And on the last day, we’ll all stand together and every knee will bow. And every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

00:18:13:28 – 00:18:32:08
Unknown
Father, I just thank you so much for this word. God, I thank you for your fire that brings forth the new life and the fire that weaves our roots to one another. Father, I pray for those right now that that have it more, and Lord, that they’ll crack open, that they’ll be honest before you, that they’ll pour out their hearts before you.

00:18:32:11 – 00:18:56:14
Unknown
That I will receive your comfort. They’ll receive your grace today. Father, I pray for those that don’t see the way out of their morning. That you’ll proclaim resurrection to them. And that weeping will endure for a night. But joy will come in the morning. And, father, I pray that you’ll bring us out from this place, ready to tell others about the God who has brought life from the dead in Jesus name.

00:18:56:16 – 00:19:24:16
Unknown
Yes. Yes. Yes. We got Rob here. We got something happening here. I don’t know what. I don’t know what it is. So? So the father says this is my word to my house today. To my people. This is my heart to you. This is not to say, words written. That word go null and void. So the father says here the word of the Lord today.

00:19:24:19 – 00:19:46:19
Unknown
This is to the hearts of my people. I see your hearts. I know the sufferings. I know the things. The pain that you’ve been through. This is to you. I love you, my church. I love you, my family. I love you, my brothers and my sisters. This is to you, says the father.

00:19:46:21 – 00:19:55:02
Unknown
Anastasia, are you here? Would you stand? Would you come? Yes.

00:19:55:04 – 00:20:05:14
Unknown
Ma’am.

00:20:05:16 – 00:20:21:22
Unknown
You can stand in the middle of the children if you’d like. Father says what I’ve deposited in you. You have received.

00:20:21:24 – 00:20:48:00
Unknown
Because, like your father, you receive beyond your years, says the Lord. And this thing will grow and grow in you. And the father’s letting you know ahead of time. Don’t be discouraged when it’s not received fully, because the revelation you’re receiving is beyond most people’s capacity. It’s.

00:20:48:03 – 00:20:54:06
Unknown
But I have done this for you, daughter.

00:20:54:09 – 00:21:15:04
Unknown
I will bring revelation upon revelation to you. Show my cut out by secret. Cut out. Father says I will have you walk in places that few will tread. Because of the fear they have of this. But you have made brave.

00:21:15:06 – 00:21:46:00
Unknown
You have made a warrior to walk in the fire you talked about. I will walk in the fire with you, says God. You will never be alone in this thing, says the Lord. But the revelation you bring will cause in some life to come a life that was lost deep in their soul long time ago. There is some sitting here today, some that have visited, that have heard this word, and they don’t really fully understand everything they’ve heard.

00:21:46:04 – 00:22:09:20
Unknown
But by my spirit, I promise you, I’m anointing their hearts that this word will go in and deliver them and heal them and strengthen them and bring them to a knowledge of the living God. I am doing this in you and through you because of my love for you, says the Lord. I anoint you today.

00:22:09:23 – 00:22:31:17
Unknown
I anoint you prophetess of the King. The word of the Lord. Flowing from you I’m the best. Unashamed. I am doing this in you, says God.

00:22:31:19 – 00:22:35:05
Unknown
Everybody.

00:22:35:08 – 00:22:50:21
Unknown
Okay.

00:22:50:24 – 00:23:10:20
Unknown
Yeah. So, we’re going to close. Close the time. Glenn, you can. We’ll have that later, too. She she did mention that there could be people that, you know, in this message there. There was a reference to people who don’t want to live. Who who think it’s better to die than to live. If that’s you.

00:23:10:21 – 00:23:28:19
Unknown
You’re so important. You’re so loved. And, in Jeremiah, one of our, one of our ministers, he would love to stay and pray with you at the end. I can stay. Stay, too. And, maybe Anastasia will even pray for you. But you can leave this place with hope. You can leave this place with life.

00:23:28:21 – 00:23:49:15
Unknown
And don’t hide it. It’s better to mourn and be comforted than to just try to get through it. Try to get through it. Because Jesus wants to heal today. So don’t let this pass by. I’m giving the call. And you’re important. If it’s just, you’re like, oh, he’s not talking to me. I just, you know. Yeah, I am so, so come and be set free today.

00:23:49:18 – 00:24:03:13
Unknown
What did she say? He came to proclaim the opening of the prison to those that are in darkness. There’s no darkness so deep that Jesus cannot break it. He hasn’t already broken it.

00:24:03:16 – 00:24:23:15
Unknown
The grave could not hold him. Through him it will not hold you. But you have to come and receive. Receive that deliverance. Okay. Let me pray for us. Wow. Thank you Lord. Thank you Lord so much. I know that we haven’t even begun to to get this yet. Help it continue to seep in and sink in.

00:24:23:17 – 00:24:42:24
Unknown
Like Gerald, I pray just that it would be like water saturating the soil. God, that it would be. We pray we would see the fruit of this in our life, God. And that we would, we’d be set free from those those times of despair. Father God put your life and your hope in us that we could be the light of the world that you called us to be.

00:24:42:26 – 00:24:51:17

In Jesus name. Amen. Oh, by the way, speaking of death from life, we’re having a baptism. And we’re starting those classes on for.

Life and death are realities that every person eventually faces. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a season of deep struggle, or moments where life feels too heavy to carry, we all encounter times that test us.

Anastasia Durgin, a high school student, shares a powerful and deeply reflective message: even in the most painful places, God is still at work—bringing life out of what feels like ashes.

Understanding Ashes

In the Bible, ashes are often associated with mourning. They symbolize grief, devastation, and what seems like complete loss. Ashes are what remain after something has been burned—after life has been reduced to what feels like nothing.

At first glance, ashes seem worthless. They represent what is gone.

But God sees differently.

“God makes something that looks worthless become the start of new life.”

Anastasia reminds us that mourning is not meaningless. While we may never regain what was lost, that loss is not wasted. God uses even the hardest moments to bring about something new.

The Power of the Fire

To illustrate this, Anastasia points to giant sequoia trees—some of the largest living things on earth.

These trees begin from tiny seeds, but those seeds cannot grow unless they are exposed to fire. The heat cracks open the cones, releasing the seeds and preparing the soil with nutrients from what was burned.

Without fire, the seed never grows.

In the same way, our hardships—our “fires”—can feel destructive. But in God’s hands, they become the very thing that produces new life.

“Sometimes God allows us to go through fire so that we can produce life.”

This doesn’t mean God causes our pain, but it does mean He is present in it—and He redeems it.

You Are Not Alone in the Fire

One of the most powerful truths in Anastasia’s message is this: we are not meant to walk through life alone.

Sequoia trees don’t grow in isolation. Their roots spread wide and intertwine with one another, sharing nutrients and strength. When one tree struggles, the others support it.

This reflects the way God designed us.

We are deeply connected—to one another, to those who came before us, and even to those who will come after us.

“Our life isn’t ours alone… it’s connected to everyone around us.”

Your life matters more than you realize. Your story, your endurance, and even your suffering can bring life to others.

Choosing to Mourn, Choosing to Heal

In a world that often tells us to ignore pain or push through it, Anastasia highlights something countercultural: mourning is necessary.

God doesn’t ask us to pretend everything is okay.

He invites us to be honest.

To grieve.
To feel.
To bring our pain before Him.

Because healing comes when we open our hearts.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

When we allow ourselves to “crack open,” like the seed in the fire, we make room for God to bring growth, healing, and transformation.

A Life That Produces Life

Ultimately, Anastasia reframes how we measure life.

It’s not about how long we live, how successful we are, or how impressive we appear.

It’s about what kind of life we give to others.

“Our life is not measured by how tall we grow… but by how much life we give along the way.”

God calls us to trust Him—even in the fire.
To believe that He is working—even in the ashes.
And to live in a way that brings life to those around us.

Because in His hands, nothing is wasted.

Discussion Guide

Summary

Anastasia Durgin shares a powerful message about how God brings life out of pain. Using the imagery of ashes and sequoia trees, she explains that hardships and mourning are not meaningless—they are often the very places where God produces new life. We are deeply connected to one another, and our lives are meant to bring life to others. Even in suffering, God is present, and healing comes when we are honest before Him.

Icebreaker Questions (3)

  1. What’s something in nature that inspires you or makes you reflect on life?
  2. Have you ever gone through a hard season that later produced something good?
  3. When life feels overwhelming, what is your natural response—push through, isolate, or talk about it?

Discussion Questions (7)

  1. What stood out most to you about the idea of “beauty from ashes”?
  2. Why do you think mourning is often avoided in our culture?
  3. How does the image of fire producing life (like sequoia trees) change your perspective on hardship?
  4. What does it mean to you that your life is connected to others?
  5. How can your struggles actually impact and bring life to someone else?
  6. What does it look like practically to “mourn before God” instead of avoiding pain?
  7. Where in your life might God be trying to bring new growth through a difficult situation?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You that nothing in our lives is wasted in Your hands. Even in our pain, our loss, and our struggles, You are working to bring life. Teach us to trust You in the fire. Give us the courage to be honest with You, to mourn, and to open our hearts so that You can heal us. Help us to see how our lives are connected to others, and use us to bring life, hope, and encouragement wherever we go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
