In a season when many churches are shrinking and biblical truth is often softened for comfort, Apostle Pat McDonald brought a clear and sobering message: God’s love and God’s judgment are not opposites — they are connected.

28 months ago today, Jonathan and Shelly Foley said yes.
00:00:39:12 – 00:01:11:20

We asked if they would be willing to be the senior leaders, the third generation of senior leaders of this 57 year old church and, some of us considered a temporary insanity. But they said, yes. And I want to take the opportunity to publicly say they’re doing an amazing job.
00:01:11:22 – 00:01:21:08
Unknown
Think about it. They were born and raised in this church, and they were willing to pastor us.
00:01:21:10 – 00:01:46:16
Unknown
But I want to commend you as well, because you are willing to invite them to pastor us. You know, when you go into the I changed your diaper thing, you know, but we’ll we’ll leave that back there. But I, I want to, to say on the behalf of my wife and I, you guys are doing a remarkable job.
00:01:46:16 – 00:02:08:00
Unknown
We’re proud of you, and we will follow you. I said I was a member of this church before I became the pastor, and that I’d be a member after I stopped being the pastor. And I say that again today, and, I’m proud to call you our pastors. I’m proud that you’re leading the charge for the next however many years.
00:02:08:03 – 00:02:14:10
Unknown
And do I hear an amen? Yeah, yeah.
00:02:14:12 – 00:02:20:29
Unknown
That’s pretty weak. Yeah.
00:02:21:01 – 00:02:44:07
Unknown
I want to commend them also. Oh. Hey, my good friend pastor. Hey, Susan. Iris are here from Oakland and Castro Valley. Welcome to the snow country. We thank you for coming. We are excited. It be good friends, very good friends. We look forward to fellowship with you guys today. You’re going to eat with us today. Yeah. Yeah.
00:02:44:07 – 00:03:24:11
Unknown
Good. Praise the Lord. I want to further commend, John and show Pastor John and show, we live in a day when the world seems to be getting less and less embracing of biblical ideas. Now, in America, churches, churches are having less attendance. Churches are closing the doors, pastors are resigning, fewer people are becoming pastors. And in that sort of setting, they’re leading a church that grew 15% last year.
00:03:24:13 – 00:03:32:25
Unknown
I think, but.
00:03:32:27 – 00:03:48:18
Unknown
But that, you know, what I really want to commend them for is being willing to teach the full truth of the word of God, not just what feels good and what’s trendy and popular.
00:03:48:20 – 00:04:01:02
Unknown
I mean, just two weeks ago, yeah, last weekend we had last weekend we had a great baptism. That was fabulous. The week before, David David Lean preached on judgment.
00:04:01:04 – 00:04:12:25
Unknown
Not a very popular topic. Not a topic that, most church leaders would be wanting to teach if they really want to continue to feel butts in seats.
00:04:12:28 – 00:04:47:03
Unknown
That that. But they were willing. They are committed to teaching the full council of God. And I commend their courage. 57 years ago, actually, before the 57 years start of Word of Life, pastor Tom Shaw built this church under the direction of God. The power of the Holy Spirit, not by might nor by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord, built it on the foundations of the Word of God.
00:04:47:06 – 00:05:09:00
Unknown
The doctrinal DNA of this church was then, is now, and it sounds like it is going to continue to be based on the principles of the doctrine of Christ. And I just want to commend them for the courage to get up and preach what we need to hear, not always what we like to hear.
00:05:09:02 – 00:05:50:09
Unknown
So it’s time for us to pray. Father, thank you Lord, for the opportunity. Thank you. Thank you for your spirit. Thank you for your word. Thank you for your love and your faithfulness to us. Now, today, as we break open Your word, as you feed us with your bread, I pray that you’ll help me, that you’ll help me say what you want said you help me say it with clarity that you say to open hearts that we can accept, receive, and walk in the words of life today we’ll give you all the praise, give you all the glory and all the honor.
00:05:50:11 – 00:06:19:03
Unknown
And we pray this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. And everyone said Amen. I really, really, Pastor David, are you around where he goes? Yes, he’s an usher today. That’s your leadership yesterday, pastor John spent all day shoveling snow so we could be here. And today he’s doing it still. Oh, he’s with junior church today.
00:06:19:05 – 00:06:22:07
Unknown
Yeah.
00:06:22:10 – 00:06:55:06
Unknown
There’s a middle linebacker. He’s ready to fill the spots that need to be filled. And, there’s our one of our pastors back there ushering, so thank you. David, I want to thank David for a great message two weeks ago. I like I mean, he and I are both history buffs, so I love his stuff. You know, it’s crucial we’ve been taught it’s crucial to teach the scriptures in context because you can you can develop any teaching if you just grab a couple of verses out of the middle of the Bible.
00:06:55:08 – 00:07:21:14
Unknown
But what I love about Pastor David, he just he doesn’t just give you context of Scripture in Scripture, but he gives you some historical context. He gives you some cultural context. And I think that’s powerful. Today I’m going to take some next the next step. He taught about judgment. This is judgment 2.0.
00:07:21:16 – 00:07:27:08
Unknown
And I want you to know, it was assigned to me by pastor daughter.
00:07:27:10 – 00:07:59:15
Unknown
But I’m honored to teach the Word of God. I’m honored to teach the Word of God. Today, I’m going to be teaching out of Matthew 25, verse 31. David spoke out of Matthew 21 and that’s it. Those six chapters are about the The Passion Week. Okay. In the context of Jesus in Jerusalem, his last time at the Passover feast before he becomes the Passover Lamb to die for our sins.
00:07:59:18 – 00:08:20:24
Unknown
So the context where he was, who he was facing, the time, the place speaks volumes. And, put that first picture up here, if you will. There’s Jerusalem, modern day Jerusalem, from the Mount of Olives.
00:08:20:26 – 00:08:54:24
Unknown
Where was Jesus when he taught on Matthew 24 and 25? Matthew 24 verse three says, as he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. Tell us, tell us, when will these sayings be? What will be the sign of your coming? What will be the end of the world, the end of the age? And Jesus answered and said unto them, and he began to teach, take heed that you be not deceived.
00:08:54:27 – 00:09:31:28
Unknown
He went on to talk some very tough subjects, very confrontational. He starts to talk about what’s about to happen in the next week, in the next 50 years, in the next 2000 years, he began to confront the the immorality and the corruption in the world that that day, in the religious circles and in this conversation, sitting on the Mount of Olives, he’s not only looking at the few private students, he’s teaching, looking over them, he sees Jerusalem.
00:09:32:01 – 00:09:42:02
Unknown
Now, I, I asked ChatGPT for a picture of what it would probably look like in the times of Jesus.
00:09:42:05 – 00:10:14:20
Unknown
No high rise, obviously no Muslim mosques. But there’s the temple, there’s the temple, there’s the beautiful gate there, the people worshiping. And as Jesus was telling about Matthew 24 and 25, he kept looking at the faces of his disciples. I’m sure he could not help but constantly be looking over their shoulders to Jerusalem during this fashion week.
00:10:14:23 – 00:10:46:24
Unknown
Pastor Jesus, pastor, love thought about judgment. What Pastor Love talked about judgment. Yeah he did. And why should we be surprised? There’s no contradiction between love and warning guys. How many parents do we have here? Do you get you got that principle? If you love your kids, you warn them.
00:10:46:26 – 00:10:55:05
Unknown
You warn them, you tell them. Don’t. Don’t do that. Why? Because you’re trying to take control of their life. You wish.
00:10:55:08 – 00:11:38:21
Unknown
And you tell them that so they don’t have to suffer terrible consequences. Love and warning goes hand in hand. Before we dive into this topic today, I need to make a couple things really clear. Shelly. Pastor Shelly, she said it really well today. God loves us and he is faithful. We must remember that all of this that we’re talking about today, two weeks ago, two years ago, two decades ago, all of this is about love.
00:11:38:24 – 00:11:53:08
Unknown
Yes, all of it is about his love for us and his faithfulness through that love for us. Because where there is no love, there’s no choice.
00:11:53:11 – 00:12:24:13
Unknown
If there’s no choice, there’s no love. 47 years ago this May, this lady said yes to me when I asked her if she’d be my wife. I mean, that’s love. 47 years. But what’s what’s the real indication of love? There are millions of men on the planet. At that point in time. She had a lot of choices. Again, maybe temporary insanity.
00:12:24:16 – 00:12:36:00
Unknown
But she chose me. There’s no love if there’s no choice, if there’s no choices, there’s no consequence.
00:12:36:03 – 00:12:39:20
Unknown
Without consequence, there’s no choices.
00:12:39:22 – 00:13:03:14
Unknown
And there won’t be consequences. There won’t be fair distribution of consequences without judgment. A loving father, as I said just a moment ago, will always warn their children of what is ahead for the consequences. Not so they can be punished so they can avoid punishment.
00:13:03:16 – 00:13:10:25
Unknown
He warns of consequences. So we’ll make the right choices.
00:13:10:27 – 00:13:39:24
Unknown
Because he loves us. So this is all about love. The teachings of Jesus during his passion Week, there were full of remarkable stories and parables of of real life circumstances. Yeah, maybe they talk. Maybe he talked about sheep and goats and tares and wheat. But boy, he was really point blank in poking the bear in the eye about real life circumstances.
00:13:39:26 – 00:14:14:12
Unknown
Real decisions are real choices and real consequences of those choices, rewards and loss of rewards, blessing and honor and punishment. Some short term judgments, in other words, judgments upon us that we can learn from them, make some changes, and do it better the next time. But he also talked about a judgment at the end of the age where the time has run out.
00:14:14:14 – 00:14:57:18
Unknown
He called that eternal judgment. Pastor love, Pastor Jesus. He did that because he loves us. So before we get into any of these, into the weeds or into the deep water, today, we must understand this most basic and fundamental truth that God, your father, loves you. I love what Prophet Picasso said. Satan’s lies are real. They’re not true, but they’re real.
00:14:57:20 – 00:15:24:27
Unknown
And what is true and what is real is that your God, your father, loves you. So let’s dive in. He loves you. For God so loved the world. He he gave his only begotten son. He loves you and that anyone can I see the hands of all that anyone’s out there. No exceptions, no excuse. Breathe in. You’re human.
00:15:24:27 – 00:15:55:22
Unknown
That’s that. You hear of anyone? Anyone who believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 1010. Another quote that Pastor Shelly quoted today. Stealing my thunder. Who knew right? Yeah, Satan has come. The thief has come. In fact, it says the thief does not come except to steal, kill and destroy. If he’s knocking on your door, I don’t.
00:15:56:00 – 00:16:00:01
Unknown
I don’t care what he says. He’s selling.
00:16:00:04 – 00:16:31:28
Unknown
It may be real, but it ain’t true. He only comes to steal, kill and destroy. But Jesus says, I have come that you might have punishment. You know, that’s what some people think. But the Word of God says what’s true, what’s real. I have come that you might have life and not just just surviving kind of life. Life abundantly.
00:16:32:00 – 00:16:52:15
Unknown
As an early young Christian, you know, I was I was young once. I was a young Christian once. And pastor Tom shot teaching this boy. It scared the pie out of me. And, I mean, I’m scared here, but this is it. Is this really what’s going to happen to the earth? She said, yeah, but let me tell you what.
00:16:52:18 – 00:17:19:14
Unknown
Let me tell you what God said, what Jesus said about you. He says, fear not, little flock, for it is your father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. As we hear these deeper things, he’s tough stories. You’ve got to understand this first and most basic principle. He wants you to have the kingdom when you want it. Now let’s read that scripture.
00:17:19:14 – 00:17:48:01
Unknown
But let’s read verse 31 as well. It says, seek the kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need. There’s a perfect classic example of choice and consequence. If we’ll seek him, he’ll give us everything we need. Do you want everything we need for this days that are lying ahead of us? Do you want everything?
00:17:48:03 – 00:17:52:10
Unknown
Then what should we do?
00:17:52:12 – 00:18:24:13
Unknown
Seek him above all else. That’s our choice. And those are the consequences again. And then we can live without fear, knowing as a little flock that he’s going to give us his kingdom. And it gives him great pleasure to do so. He’s a righteous and he’s a just God. And there are conditions, and there are consequences to the choices we make.
00:18:24:15 – 00:18:38:24
Unknown
If we’ll seek him, he’ll give us the kingdom. There are some guarantees, I can guarantee you that I’m going to screw up.
00:18:38:26 – 00:19:17:07
Unknown
And not on. Not on purpose. But I’m not perfect. That’s a guarantee. I’m not perfect. And I’m going to make mistakes. I’m. I’m going to fail you. I can guarantee you that. But I can also guarantee you that the God said that if I confess my sins and forsake them, that I can find mercy. God promises you and me that if we confess, he will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
00:19:17:09 – 00:20:00:15
Unknown
This whole relationship is about grace and mercy and love. There are consequences. There going to be consequences to our choices. So, and I could probably finish the message right here. Let’s make good choices. I don’t think you need a high IQ to catch that. Those of us with a room temperature IQ, we’ve got that. Let’s just make good choices.
00:20:00:18 – 00:20:34:17
Unknown
You see, God is building champions of faith. And I’m looking at him. You see, champions are not those who never fall. They just get back up. They just get back in the game. Champions are not those who never fail. They just don’t quit. They learn from their failures. Hopefully they’ll eat and learn from somebody else’s failures and they don’t quit.
00:20:34:19 – 00:21:07:08
Unknown
They learn from these mistakes and they move forward. That’s who God’s calling you. That’s what he’s calling you and calling us to do, to be. So the title of my message is The Great Divide the Kingdom away. There’s going to be a great divide. The topic is basically on eternal accountability.
00:21:07:11 – 00:21:29:19
Unknown
Eternal judgment. We’re going to focus on the fact that true disciples will be separated from those who aren’t. There is a great divide beginning to happen. So let’s dive into how are we doing in time? Terrible. Okay.
00:21:29:22 – 00:21:50:28
Unknown
Matthew 25, verse 31 to 46. Can we have that in the background? Here we have the background, the temple, the view of Jerusalem. Within 40 years, that would be rubble. It would be torn down. Every stone.
00:21:51:01 – 00:22:28:12
Unknown
Matthew 25, verse 31. When Jesus, Jesus says, When the Son of Man comes in his glory. And all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations I want to point out the word nations is translated from the Greek word eph nos, which is more accurately translated peoples, people, groups, races. It’s not making any reference to political entities or governments.
00:22:28:15 – 00:22:32:10
Unknown
Let’s talk about people.
00:22:32:12 – 00:23:03:04
Unknown
All nations, all people will be gathered in his presence. He will separate the people. And then he goes into some illustrations, hopefully to help us understand what this thing is going to look like. Be like in the future. Like like a shepherd separates sheep from goats. Let me say right up front, he’s not talking about greatest of all time goats here now talking about Tom Brady.
00:23:03:04 – 00:23:06:06
Unknown
Okay.
00:23:06:08 – 00:23:31:11
Unknown
By the way, he’s also not saying that he likes sheep better than goats. It’s a little strange. And he’s talking about people and he’s pointing out there is a difference in the nature of these two animals. One’s a sheep, one’s a goat. They’re different animals. They may have similarities, may eat the same stuff, kind of. They may stay in the same flocks.
00:23:31:11 – 00:24:05:04
Unknown
They may be shepherd by the same shepherds barked at by the same dogs. They’re not the same animals. As a shepherd separates the sheep from his goats, he’ll place the sheep at his right hand, and the goats at his left. Another point I want to make clear. It’s not that he doesn’t like left handed people. He’s also not making an editorial about American political system.
00:24:05:06 – 00:24:44:04
Unknown
This is Jesus. 2000 years ago. At that point in time, the cultural context. And I don’t know how or why I got to that. But at the time when you set somebody on your right, it’s a place of honor. When you set somebody on your left, it’s a place of dishonor. Again, I don’t understand exactly how that became, but that was the cultural context of the time was no political editorial, no editorial about right hand, left hand, no editorial by I like goats and I don’t like sheep or vice versa.
00:24:44:07 – 00:25:13:03
Unknown
Then the King will say to those on the right, come, you who are blessed of my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty, you gave me drink. I was a stranger. You invited me into your home. I was naked and you gave me clothing.
00:25:13:05 – 00:25:54:20
Unknown
I was sick and you cared for me. I was in prison and you visited me. Verse 37 then these righteous ones will reply, Lord, when. When did we see you hungry or thirsty? A stranger or naked? Sick or in prison? When? He said, we say, excuse me in verse 40. And the King will say, I tell you the truth, when you did it to the least of these, my brothers and sisters, you did it to me.
00:25:54:22 – 00:26:01:23
Unknown
And before we go in to verse 4041, let’s let’s break this down.
00:26:01:25 – 00:26:52:20
Unknown
Verse 35, he’s defining the actions of the sheep. The sheep are blessed. They’re going to inherit this kingdom prepared from the beginning of the world. And why? Because they did generous, considerate, compassionate, loving things they did so they’re blessed. They did something. They’re going to be judged. They’re going to be rewarded for what they did. Now, some might interpret this parable as teaching a message or a doctrine of works that you must work for your salvation.
00:26:52:23 – 00:27:28:25
Unknown
I’m here to declare, hopefully as clear as possible, people who think that are missing the point. It’s an incorrect interpretation of the scriptures. And let me tell you why the works didn’t make them who they were. Their works did not earn them who they were. The work simply revealed who they were and the works revealed who they were, didn’t make them who they were.
00:27:28:27 – 00:27:38:00
Unknown
They did not become sheep because of what they did. They did what they did because they were sheep.
00:27:38:02 – 00:27:50:24
Unknown
This is not a transactional relationship going on here. It’s a family relationship. We’re talking about the nature of the sheep.
00:27:50:26 – 00:28:16:25
Unknown
They did what they did because of their nature. They’re blessed. They’re heirs because of who they are. If you take the illustration out of the sheep and goats and put it on us, they’re blessed and they’re going to inherit because they’re sons, because they’re part of the family of God. And the good works didn’t make them the son.
00:28:17:02 – 00:28:25:08
Unknown
It revealed their sonship.
00:28:25:11 – 00:28:47:21
Unknown
Our works don’t earn our salvation. They don’t make us saved. Our works reveal who we are as sons and daughters of God. They manifest. They prove the nature is in us. A salvation has occurred to us.
00:28:47:23 – 00:29:17:24
Unknown
Turn with me to Ephesians chapter two, eight, nine and ten. I’m going to read out of the NLT it says, God saved you by his grace. Can it get any clearer? God saved you by his grace when you believed, and you can’t take credit for it. It is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done.
00:29:17:27 – 00:29:48:12
Unknown
So I say that again, salvation is not a reward for the good things that we have done, so none of us can boast about it because we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus so that we can do the good works he planned for us long ago. The good works don’t earn it. They reveal it.
00:29:48:15 – 00:30:04:02
Unknown
The good works don’t make you a son. They show that you’re a son. They show you that you’re a son. That you’re a son. That you’re a daughter.
00:30:04:04 – 00:30:10:14
Unknown
Is this making sense to anybody?
00:30:10:17 – 00:30:38:12
Unknown
God the king in this, in this story is saying, come inherit the kingdom because you’re manifesting my nature. You’re manifesting the love, the compassion, the generosity of my son Jesus. You’re manifesting his nature that he put in you at salvation. That’s who you are. That’s what you’re showing. Come on in your inheritance.
00:30:38:14 – 00:31:11:00
Unknown
Verse 37, these people, these sheep. But it’s of course, talking about people. These people did good deeds as a natural response from the character and the nature of love, compassion and generosity. It was a character that well out flowed from his nature. A nature was put in at salvation by grace through faith because he loved us. It’s who you are.
00:31:11:03 – 00:31:36:00
Unknown
I love the way David said it two weeks ago. His son Josiah has his nature, and if you get up and do good choices, he’ll develop good character, right? The nature first, the character reveals the nature. In David. We think it’d be a good thing for him to reveal your character, in spite of the fact you don’t like the Seahawks or the Patriots.
00:31:36:00 – 00:31:38:28
Unknown
Okay.
00:31:39:01 – 00:32:06:29
Unknown
Come back to 37, verse 37. It was such an automatic, unconscious action response that these people didn’t even recognize that he was talking about them. Like, like, well, man, when did we see you sick in prison? They just did it. Naturally. They don’t even recognize it. That’s just who they are.
00:32:07:01 – 00:32:41:08
Unknown
It was their nature. It’s who they are. All right, let’s go talk about goats. Let’s go on up here to. Where are we? Here. Let me chapter 25. And it’s now verse 41. Then the king will turn to those on his left. The people who have made some pretty bad choices, people who have lived in unrighteousness, people who have made choices that did not bring life.
00:32:41:11 – 00:33:10:15
Unknown
Those on his left. He’s going to say, away with you, you cursed ones, into eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons. Side note hell, eternal fire was never created for humans. It was created for the devil and his demons. But because sin came into the world and death by sin, this is where God is forced to send people.
00:33:10:17 – 00:33:17:01
Unknown
It’s not what he wants, it’s what we have decided.
00:33:17:03 – 00:33:41:12
Unknown
I was hungry and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, a stranger, I was naked, I was sick, I was in prison. You didn’t do anything, they’ll say. But Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty? And he said, man, when. When you did it to the least. When you refused to do it to the least of my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.
00:33:41:14 – 00:33:59:19
Unknown
And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go on to eternal life. These these aren’t my words. These are the words of Pastor Love, pastor, pastor Jesus.

The great tragedy about hell is that no one has to go there. It’s a terrifying thought to know that real people will choose to spend eternity in such suffering.

Jesus said it, and I would imagine with great pain, the truth is, so many men and women will prefer will choose darkness over the light. It’s about choice. Love has choice, choices have consequences. And a loving father instructs, warns, and ultimately will be forced to judge the great divide. Let’s talk a little bit more about judge judging and judgment.
00:35:00:25 – 00:35:04:27

That’s a word that got a bad rap.

Don’t judge me. You’re judging me. One of the most quoted verse in the last 25 years, according to a poll by think, was Josh McDowell. Used to be John 316 was the most quoted verse in America. Now it’s Matthew seven one don’t judge lest you be judged.

As a as a culture, we’re obsessed with judgment. We always want to judge somebody else. But don’t you dare judge me.

The word judge means to form an opinion or conclusion about something, to decide the results of the Greek defines the word is to distinguish, to decide, to esteem, determine and conclude something negative about any of those. It means to separate, to emphasize the qualitative aspect that can either go to a positive verdict righteousness or negative verdict, which condemns the nature of the sin that brings it on.
00:36:20:17 – 00:36:26:04
Unknown
Judgment, basically in simple terms, is neutral.
00:36:26:06 – 00:37:03:07
Unknown
It’s not negative. It’s not positive. It’s unbiased. It should be. That’s the judgment that God gives. Neutral, unbiased. We get what we deserve, okay? We sinned. We deserve death. But Jesus came and paid the price for our debt of sin. And when we accept his debt, paid on our behalf, then we are free from the sin. We made that choice.
00:37:03:07 – 00:37:10:11
Unknown
We get the result of that choice life in life everlasting.
00:37:10:13 – 00:37:37:24

The word judgment when referring to God, means to pass or pronounce a decision or sentence for or against. In the case of the Lord, he always carries out every sentence in total righteousness and justice. Other synonym is assessment and discernment.
00:37:37:26 – 00:38:22:02
Unknown
Due to the misunderstanding of the word judgment, many people struggle with the view of God. Is he a loving God or is he a judging God? And the answer is I be yes. He’s both a loving God and a judging God because judging is a part of love. There’s love because there’s choice. There’s choice because there’s consequence. There’s just consequence because there is judgment by a just God.

We just come through two weeks of Winter Olympics. Anybody watching Winter Olympics, Olympics then? Yeah. What kind of Olympics would we have if there were no judges?

Even those races where that’s mainly a stopwatch. If they don’t stay in the boundaries of that race, they’re disqualified. Or the slalom. It’s the first guy the fastest down the hill, right? You gotta hit all the gates. There’s somebody judging you. Get those competitive with those four guys or four gals going down together, and they have photo finish because it’s it’s too close for the naked eye to figure out.
00:39:06:28 – 00:39:20:21
Unknown
So they have to have a photo. There’s a judge involved to bring judgment so you can have winners, victors, gold medals, silver medals, bronze medals.

Judging is not bad. It’s neutral. It’s unbiased, and there is short term judgment. That was the main thing that Pastor David was talking about. Judgment that we can learn from and use to the next situation, like one of those races, I think they called it the snowboard cross. It’s like a motocross or snowboard. There’s four guys or four gals and they’re there ready to go.
00:39:47:22 – 00:40:15:11

And right, this one guy was 17 and the guy next to him was 44. Right. Hang on a second. Tells me I’m late. Okay, let me stop it. Come on. Here we go. The 17 year old, whatever he does on that race, he’s going to learn from it and use it at the next Olympics. Right. What about the 44 year old?
00:40:15:13 – 00:40:21:19

Make it count, dude, because this is your last shot.

Short term judgment and long term judgment. Eternal judgment.
00:40:32:05 – 00:40:51:11

Like that 18 year old you can learn. But that 44 year old. This is your last shot. In the end, when we go into eternity, there’s no place in the Bible that I have found that says we get another shot at it.
00:40:51:13 – 00:41:14:09

We will be judged by the things we did on this side of eternity. I’ve read a lot of editorials and doctrinal positions of people who think they’re Christians and think they’re following the Bible. I’ve never found a place that says that if you baptize yourself a couple more times, that your great granddaddy is going to be sprung from purgatory, it’s it.
00:41:14:12 – 00:41:20:07

I just can’t find that in the Bible.
00:41:20:10 – 00:41:43:22

We will stand before the judgment seat of Christ and be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good and the evil that we have done in our earthly body. But that’s not for salvation. That’s not to send you to hell.

I mentioned a moment ago about the principles of the doctrine of Christ, that that has been a foundational doctrinal DNA of this church. And the last one mentioned is eternal judgment, the last to resurrection from the dead and eternal judgment in those teachings. Amen. We have a lot of written notes and materials for that. There’s some real specialists in this church.

But oh, he’s teaching junior high. And you know, it’s hard to be serious when you talk about Brian Whitmer because he’s such a funny guy. But with all sincerity, that guy has got the teaching on eternal judgment down. He understands it. He has taught it. He tutors it. You want to know more about what the Bible teaches about this long term judgment issue, and how it’s about God’s love and faithfulness, because God in his love and faithfulness is warning about it.
00:42:53:03 – 00:43:21:18

So we don’t have to suffer that you can. If you go and talk to Brian at fellowship, you’re going to have a very interesting time and he will nail it down for you. But it’s not just Brian. Nancy, Sydney was one of my first teachers on the eternal judgment. Peggy. Whoa! She’s the bomb. Cathy. The imitate. You better have your seatbelts on because she will teach it and teach it right.

This is well taught, scripturally supported doctrine. There’s going to be two resurrections. There’s going to be the resurrection of the righteous and a resurrection of the unrighteous. Those who are saved, those who believed in the lamb that was to come, and those of us who believed in the lamb that came. We are going to be raised at the beginning, and a thousand years later there’ll be a second resurrection of those who did not choose Jesus.
00:43:53:12 – 00:44:18:22

They will be raised and go before the judgment, the great white throne, and be cast into fire. This is what the Bible says. If you stick your head in the sand, it’s going to be a bad afternoon for you. Don’t ignore what the Bible says, but this first resurrection will be for those who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

Their sin got dealt with on the cross that judgment will not be for sin. It’ll be for rewards. That judgment will be the awards ceremony. It’s going to be you getting awards for what you did right. If you didn’t do right, you don’t get the reward. Paul said. It.

In first Corinthians three, verse nine through 15, let me read that to you. You are God’s building. Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Others are building now on it, but whoever is building on this foundation must be careful what’s our instructions? Be careful as you build on this foundation, for no one can lay any foundation other than the one we have already laid, Jesus Christ.
00:45:22:17 – 00:45:42:26

The foundation is that salvation that we receive by grace, by love, by faith, not of our own works. But now there were saved. Now that we’re on this foundation, we have a job to do to build on that foundation.
00:45:42:28 – 00:46:20:14
Unknown
Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials. Choice. There’s gold, silver, and jewels, wood, hay and stubble. Six different types of material, really. Two categories of material wood, hay and stubble. Not very expensive. Easy to work with. Gold, silver and precious stone. Very expensive. Miserable to work with. It says that fire will test and prove it.
00:46:20:17 – 00:46:54:15
Unknown
On that judgment day. Fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. Now listen and listen real carefully. If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is not surviving, if it’s burned up, it’s gone. The builder will suffer great loss, but the builder will be saved.
00:46:54:17 – 00:47:21:16
Unknown
The builder doesn’t lose his salvation. He didn’t build right. It got burned up. There’ll be no rewards for him. But he’s going to be saved. He’s not going to hell. He’s not tossed into the lake of fire. He will be saved. But like someone barely escaping through the wall of flames. This is going to be an award ceremony, folks.
00:47:21:18 – 00:47:52:13
Unknown
And those who decide to build well, to use the right material, they’re going to receive a reward choice. Consequence. Salvation is a settled deal. You did it and you got it by grace through mercy. It was free. You didn’t earn it. You can’t lose it. But now, what sort of rewards do you want in eternity?

As I mentioned earlier, it’s as simple as a parent not allowing their three year old to go out and play on the street. The three year old just sees the strict mean parent. They won’t let them do what they want to do.
00:48:08:16 – 00:48:25:15

It’s real simple, and it’s really good. But our response should be repentance, not just repenting so we don’t have to go to hell. And not just so we miss a huge pile of bad consequences. Frankly, I want to repent so that I can live the best life here and the best life there. It’s not all about eternity. It’s also about tomorrow and today.

Second Peter, chapter three, verse nine. The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise to come the end of the world. The end of the age. He’s not slow like some people think. God does not anyone to suffer pain, to suffer punishment. He gave his life so that everybody is as simple as believing and receiving him, so that everyone can be free from an eternity of punishment. Opening with encouragement for Pastors Jonathan and Shelly Foley, Apostle Pat affirmed their courage to preach the full truth of Scripture. In a cultural moment that often resists difficult biblical themes, he commended the church for remaining grounded in the Word of God.
From there, the message moved into what he called “Judgment 2.0,” building on Pastor David’s previous teaching and focusing on Matthew 25:31–46 — Jesus’ teaching about the separation of the sheep and the goats.
Love Requires Choice
Apostle Pat laid an important foundation: everything God does flows from love and faithfulness.
He explained a simple but powerful progression:
- Where there is no love, there is no choice.
- Where there is no choice, there are no consequences.
- Where there are consequences, there must be judgment.
Just as loving parents warn their children to protect them, God warns humanity not to control us but to save us. Divine warning is not cruelty — it is compassion.
The Great Divide
In Matthew 25, Jesus describes a future moment when all peoples will stand before Him. Like a shepherd separating sheep from goats, He will distinguish between two groups.
Apostle Pat carefully clarified:
- This is not about politics or preference.
- It is about nature revealed through action.
- The sheep and goats may appear similar externally, but they are fundamentally different.
The sheep are welcomed into the Kingdom because their lives demonstrated compassion — feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, caring for the sick, and visiting the imprisoned.
But the key insight of the message was this:
Their works did not make them sheep — their works revealed they were sheep.
Salvation, he emphasized through Ephesians 2:8–10, is by grace through faith alone. Good works are not the price of salvation; they are the evidence of transformation.
Judgment Is Not the Enemy
Apostle Pat addressed the modern discomfort with the word judgment. In today’s culture, “Don’t judge me” has become a common refrain. But biblically, judgment simply means a fair and righteous assessment.
He compared it to the Olympics: without judges, there are no winners, no medals, and no justice. Proper judgment is neutral, necessary, and righteous when carried out by God.
Two Realities Every Believer Must Understand
The message made an important theological distinction.
1. Salvation Judgment — settled by grace
Through Christ’s sacrifice, believers are forgiven and made new. This is a gift, not earned by works.
2. Reward Judgment — determined by our building
Using 1 Corinthians 3:9–15, Apostle Pat explained that believers will stand before Christ to have their works tested:
- Gold, silver, precious stones → lasting reward
- Wood, hay, stubble → burned away
Even if someone’s works are burned up, the person can still be saved — but they may suffer loss of reward.
This is not about fear of hell for believers.
It is about eternal accountability and eternal reward.
God’s Heart: No One Needs to Be Lost
The tone of the message repeatedly returned to hope. Quoting 2 Peter 3:9, Apostle Pat reminded the church that God is patient, not wanting anyone to perish.
Repentance, therefore, is not merely about avoiding punishment. It is about stepping into the fullness of life now and forever.
The invitation was clear and compassionate: while we are still breathing, it is not too late.
The Simple Call
Apostle Pat closed with a straightforward challenge:
Make good choices.
Not from fear.
Not from striving.
But from love, gratitude, and the desire to hear one day:
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Study Guide
Summary
Apostle Pat McDonald teaches that God’s warnings about judgment flow from His love. Using Matthew 25, he explains that the separation of the sheep and goats reveals true spiritual nature through compassionate living. Salvation is by grace through faith, but believers will still give account for how they build their lives on Christ. The message calls believers to repentance, wise choices, and faithful living in light of eternity.
Ice-Breaker Questions (choose 1–3)
- What’s a warning someone gave you that later proved to be wise?
- When you hear the word judgment, what feelings come up first?
- What’s one small choice that ended up having a big impact on your life?
Discussion Questions
- Apostle Pat said love requires choice. How does that reshape how you view God’s warnings?
- Why do you think many people today resist the idea of divine judgment?
- In Matthew 25, the sheep were unaware of their good works. What does that reveal about genuine Christlike character?
- How does understanding that “works reveal salvation, not earn it” protect us from both legalism and passivity?
- Read 1 Corinthians 3:9–15. What might “gold vs. stubble” look like in everyday modern life?
- How can believers live with eternal awareness without becoming fear-driven or anxious?
- What is one practical step you sense the Holy Spirit inviting you to take after hearing this message?
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for Your great love and faithfulness toward us. Thank You that salvation is a gift of grace through Jesus Christ. Give us hearts that respond quickly to Your warnings and wisdom. Help us build our lives with what lasts and reflect Your compassion in how we live. Strengthen us to make choices that honor You both now and for eternity. In Jesus’ name, amen.
