Okay. Before we get started, I need to clarify some things because that video may have caused some confusion. Okay. The kingdom of God. What is the kingdom of God? Kids, I need to catch you up. Because all the adults in here, they’ve been learning about the Kingdom of God for like eight weeks.

00:01:22:08 – 00:01:50:19
Unknown
And they know it so well. I need to catch you up in, like, two minutes here. So the first part of kingdom is King. Everyone say king. Okay, the second part of kingdom is dumb. Everybody say dumb. Dumb is short for Dominion. So who has dominion in the kingdom? The king. Everybody say the king. Perfect. That’s what a kingdom is.

00:01:50:25 – 00:02:27:23
Unknown
A king has the all the power in the kingdom. Okay. So, So the kingdom of God is God’s way of doing things. Where? Where God is the king. Okay. Not fear. Not anxiety, not stress, not anything else like that. God is the king. So who’s the king in the kingdom? Perfect. We are making our way. Okay. The other thing about the kingdom of God versus the kingdom of this world.

00:02:27:26 – 00:02:59:02
Unknown
Is that okay, like, let’s say America has the Constitution, right? So the Bible is the constitution of God’s kingdom. Okay, everybody say the Bible. Okay. The Bible tells us what promises the king is made to us. It also tells us what he asks us to do and what authority he gives us. The people of the Kingdom and how life works best in the kingdom.

00:02:59:04 – 00:03:29:26
Unknown
Okay. So that’s what the Bible does. The kingdom also has a culture. Okay. So, like right now, the world that we live in has a culture, but the also the kingdom of God has a culture. Okay. The culture in God’s God’s kingdom is peace over worry. It’s love instead of hate. It’s truth over popularity. It’s joy instead of despair.

00:03:29:29 – 00:04:09:12
Unknown
And it’s holiness instead of compromise. Okay, so it’s like the opposite of the world, okay? The kingdom of God is love, joy, peace, happiness, righteousness. Yes. All right. So now that we know the culture of the kingdom, the kingdom. When is the kingdom? Okay, so what did Jesus say? Jesus said, the kingdom of God is at hand. Okay.

00:04:09:15 – 00:04:35:04
Unknown
It’s at hand. So that means it’s like right now. It’s like an arm’s length away. You can touch it. It’s right now. So when is the kingdom of God? Right. Right now. When is the kingdom of God? Okay. Not. Not later. Not like maybe in, like, 20 years. Not in 1980. It’s right now. Okay.

00:04:35:06 – 00:05:08:05
Unknown
All right. So that’s that. Okay. The last thing I want to tell you about the kingdom before I have some people come up is the kingdom of God is powerful. Okay, everybody say powerful. It breaks chains. So earlier, Johnny, we were singing about freedom. Okay. Freedom. Freedom. Remember that we also. We can run whenever we want. Okay. That’s only in God’s kingdom.

00:05:08:08 – 00:05:33:08
Unknown
Okay. The kingdom of the world. You’re not allowed to be free. Okay. You’re actually opposite of freedom. You’re in prison. You’re in chains. You’re in sadness and hopelessness. So my question to you is, do we want the kingdom of God, or do we want to be part of the world system, the kingdom of God? Right. You want freedom?

00:05:33:14 – 00:06:00:21
Unknown
You want joy and happiness. Okay. So the kingdom of God is powerful. And the other thing about the kingdom of God, I have to be. I have to show you this. It’s advancing. It’s advancing. It’s on the move. Okay. It’s advancing. It’s not stagnant. It’s not in one place, but it’s moving and it’s powerful and it’s taking territory.

00:06:00:24 – 00:06:35:06
Unknown
Okay. We have to understand that because the next portion of this lesson talks about working. The kingdom of God takes some work because we, the people of the kingdom of God, living in it. When right now are taking territory. Okay. So it takes work. All right. So I need Miss Deborah and maybe Miss Pinnell to help me really quick.

00:06:35:09 – 00:07:00:29
Unknown
And I need all the kids that aren’t up here yet to come up here. And I need Declan and Asher and Gideon to come up here. All right. So you guys hand out these things to everybody, and all the kids get one grape. Everybody hold up the grape when you get it. All right.

00:07:01:01 – 00:07:35:29
Unknown
So today’s lesson, everyone. Samuel. Company and adults. If you’re following along in your Bibles is out of Matthew 21. You guys come up here. Okay. Matthew 21, verse 28, verse 28 through 32. So if you want to follow along with this parable that we are going to act out, that’d be great. All right. Each of you need a microphone.

00:07:36:01 – 00:07:53:29
Unknown
So find a microphone. All right, kids, I need you all to sit down with your grapes, because you guys. You guys are grapes. Everybody say grapes down here. Okay. Hold up your grapes to the people.

00:07:54:01 – 00:08:22:06
Unknown
All right, sit down. Sit down. Okay. Now, in this parable, the characters are the grapes. Okay, then we also have a dad who also is a king. Okay. Oh, wait. You’re the dad. Sorry. You’re the dad. Can you put that on? Okay. Then we also have a son. This will be called son one. Everybody’s had to get in.

00:08:22:08 – 00:08:45:24
Unknown
Gideon’s in junior high. He’s awesome. He’s one of the best actors I know of. Okay, Gideon, you have that on. You also have here. You’re going to be holding this in this skit. Okay. And then, Declan, you’re going to be the other son. Okay, son number two will call you, and you’re going to be playing video games on this.

00:08:45:26 – 00:09:01:05
Unknown
Okay. All right. Okay. So one thing that Jesus never stop talking about is the kingdom of God, right? So.

00:09:01:07 – 00:09:07:26
Unknown
We have to share. Hold on. Let me get to this page.

00:09:07:29 – 00:09:41:09
Unknown
Jesus tells a story that explains what who really belongs to the kingdom of God. Do we want to find out who really belongs to the kingdom of God? Perfect. Okay, Asher. You ready? Okay. This is Asher with Asher. He’s going to be dad King. Okay, so. Dad. King. Dad King. One day looked out upon his, big vineyard of grapes, and he realized, okay, grapes, you have to show all your grapes.

00:09:41:11 – 00:10:16:26
Unknown
He realized that there had to be work done. I need work to be done. Okay. He also realized that he needed help with this work. How can I get help? Then, magically, he looked to his left and his right, and he realized he had two sons. How great is having two sons to do work? Okay. All right. So.

00:10:16:28 – 00:10:54:17
Unknown
Dad, King goes up to son one. Okay. This is Jesus’s words. Okay? I’m not okay. That King goes at the son one and says, I need help working in the vineyard today. I need help working in the vineyard now. Son one he says, no, no, no, no. He says no. Like no way, no way. Wait a second. He just said no to his dad and then wait a second.

00:10:54:19 – 00:11:03:18
Unknown
So then, son one went back to just playing his video games like all bad sons do.

00:11:03:20 – 00:11:38:16
Unknown
So then Asher dad King put his hands up like this. Said, what am I? What are you doing? What do you mean? Okay. Then he. Then he shook his head and walked away. Okay. Son one kept playing video games. Okay, so then son one was thinking about it. Come home. Okay. Son one kept thinking. Okay. Then he realized maybe I made a bad choice.

00:11:38:18 – 00:12:11:05
Unknown
Maybe, just maybe, I made a bad choice. So, son one put down his video games, and he actually went and started working in the vineyard. So, son one, start picking some grapes. Okay. Now, meanwhile, son two playing video games over here. Okay. After dad came up to son two and said, son, will you work in the vineyard today?

00:12:11:08 – 00:12:40:00
Unknown
Can you work in the near today? Son two said yes, sir. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. I’ll do it right. Right away. Right here, right now. I’ll do it. I got you. Okay, so dad was super happy. Wait, wait until you don’t know this parable. Apparently. Hold on, son to Santa. Put back your headgear. So dad walked away proudly.

00:12:40:01 – 00:13:15:14
Unknown
Wow. I sure love Santa. Saying I love my son. Number two. Yeah. We don’t even have names for his sons. Okay, but son one said, well, I gotta finish this last, fortnight. Something say that I gotta finish this last night or something. Okay. Keep your microphone on. Okay. Now, he also then, you know, kept playing and eventually Santa stopped.

00:13:15:16 – 00:13:22:08
Unknown
Like, he didn’t even remember that he was supposed to work, and he didn’t even work.

00:13:22:10 – 00:13:34:07
Unknown
Son one. Son two. Okay, everybody, give a round of applause for sons and king.

00:13:34:09 – 00:14:05:17
Unknown
All right, so you can just put it down and then put your microphones up. Thank you. All right. Grapes. Good job. Grapes. You can stay here if you want. All right. So Jesus told this story to all the people. Okay. And he had a lesson to give. And that lesson was which son was right. Okay, so I want to ask you, everyone.

00:14:05:19 – 00:14:12:08
Unknown
Who was the wrong son in this situation or in this parable?

00:14:12:11 – 00:14:46:06
Unknown
Okay. Son number. Both. Okay, maybe. But then who ended up being right? One. Son. One. Okay. So here’s the thing, son one. He said no right away, right? No, dad, I don’t want to do that. But then he thought about it, and he repented. And he said, you know what? I know that I shouldn’t be doing the video games.

00:14:46:06 – 00:15:03:24
Unknown
I know that I should be working in my father’s vineyard. Okay. Son two. He said yes right away. Right. But then did he go and work? Okay, so he was disobedient, right?

00:15:03:26 – 00:15:09:29
Unknown
All right. So?

00:15:10:02 – 00:15:39:15
Unknown
The kingdom of God. Now we’re going to bring it back to the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God, which Jesus was teaching us about, was, who’s going to get into the kingdom of God? And he was telling people because people wanted to know who’s going to get into the kingdom of God. And he would do this in a way that would share, information and also pierce the heart of the people asking because they always had different motives on their question.

00:15:39:17 – 00:16:17:15
Unknown
So he answered them saying, basically, you guys denied. And they didn’t, believe when John the Baptist said, repent. Okay. You guys heard the message of repentance but didn’t repent. We have more grapes coming out. We have more workers. Thank you. All right. So then. So that is an indicator of us. How many times have we known that we need to do something but don’t do it?

00:16:17:17 – 00:16:44:18
Unknown
All right. So I have a story. You guys ready for a story? Okay. So, like 20 years ago, I wanted to do a race. And this race involved swimming. I was not a good swimmer. Okay. All right. I need you guys to all back down. Okay. I feel like I’m getting invaded by the kingdom of God.

00:16:44:20 – 00:17:03:19
Unknown
Okay. Thank you. Dad. Okay. So I didn’t know anything about swimming. And the only time I had to work on swimming was at, like, five in the morning. Now, how many of you here have ever tried to wake up and go exercise?

00:17:03:22 – 00:17:25:17
Unknown
Like, maybe the hardest thing in the world to do, right? To get out of your warm bed and go exercise. Now time’s up by a thousand to say that you’re going to get up and swim. Especially when it’s cold. I was telling people. I would tell people, hey, I’m going to be a swimmer. I’m going to do this.

00:17:25:19 – 00:17:33:29
Unknown
And like, day after day after day, I would just stay in bed.

00:17:34:02 – 00:17:56:19
Unknown
And I didn’t go swimming. And it got to the point. John, stop. It got to the point where people would come up to me and be like, hey, how’s that swimming going? I’m like, oh, that swimming is going great. Woof! I’ve been swimming a ton. And they’re like, well, when do you swim? Early. Early in the morning. Where you don’t know if I’m swimming or not.

00:17:56:21 – 00:17:59:02
Unknown
I was.

00:17:59:04 – 00:18:17:27
Unknown
And I just, I knew inside that I needed to swim and I needed to get up, man. The motivation to get out and swim was just not there to get out of my bed and go in the cold water, even though it’s warm. But it was cold. People would come up to me. How’s the swimming going? I’m like, is this going?

00:18:17:27 – 00:18:46:18
Unknown
Is going? And I think they sort of catching on. So eventually I needed to repent. I needed to change my ways and start doing it. So what I did is I started wearing my swim stuff in the back. Not my goggles, but everything else is like swim shorts. And that was the only way that I could get going to do it.

00:18:46:20 – 00:19:22:25
Unknown
And it reminded me this story reminded me of that time because in all honesty, God’s kingdom. Yes. You’re invited. Yes, you’re in when you repent and you ask Jesus into your heart to be the sovereign King of your life. That’s your entrance into the kingdom. But that’s when the work begins, okay? That’s when you have to start getting up, putting down your distractions and actually working.

00:19:22:27 – 00:19:49:17
Unknown
Okay. That is what God is looking for. And we’re not. It’s not based on your works. We’re not saved by works. But he is expecting us to work for his kingdom because God’s kingdom, like I mentioned earlier, is advancing. It’s moving. Okay. And it’s taking territory. And he needs all of you guys. He needs all of you guys to actually be motivated.

00:19:49:24 – 00:20:17:13
Unknown
And maybe, maybe God’s asking you to get healthy and get up and go exercise. I don’t know, but I think God’s also asking you to do things that make you uncomfortable asking you, especially during the holidays. Okay. Are you going to sit with that person? Are you going to reach out to that individual? Are you going to actually invite the kids up front and preach your whole message with them right here?

00:20:17:15 – 00:20:32:04
Unknown
Okay. Difficult things, uncomfortable things. But God’s asking us to do that. And so to wrap it up here, because we are getting close to ending.

00:20:32:07 – 00:20:38:03
Unknown
I have questions. Three questions. Okay.

00:20:38:05 – 00:21:10:21
Unknown
Is Jesus truly the king of your life? Yes. Good. If Jesus is truly the king of your life, then the king of this world doesn’t mean anything to you. The King of this world says that you have to prove that you are successful. That you have to be popular. That you have to make money. That you have to do things, in order to have peace.

00:21:10:23 – 00:21:21:02
Unknown
But if Jesus is the king of your heart, he. He’s already given that to you. You already have that. All right.

00:21:21:04 – 00:21:30:24
Unknown
All right. Second question. Do you say yes with your mouth or yes with your lips?

00:21:30:26 – 00:21:35:08
Unknown
Perfect. Okay.

00:21:35:10 – 00:22:11:29
Unknown
Are you living in the kingdom today? Not someday, but now. Yes. All right. Side note. I thought it was interesting for parents. The the dad, he was totally fine. And interrupting the two kids with their video games and saying, time to work. It’s really good. I’m not a pro, but I will tell you, keeping your kid busy and working is biblical.

00:22:12:01 – 00:22:23:20
Unknown
And they may not want to do it. They don’t want to. Okay. They don’t want to. Patrick, I’m looking at you.

00:22:23:22 – 00:22:55:07
Unknown
But it’s good for them. Because without work, without responsibility, it also will breed dysfunction. So side note, I don’t know. There’s a lot of things we can learn about parables. Right? That was one thing I thought. All right. So, to wrap it up, thank you guys. Thank you for enduring the skit with us and the fun. I’m going to pray, and we’re going to pray and be dismissed.

00:22:55:09 – 00:23:22:29
Unknown
And it’s going to start like this, the Lord’s Prayer. Lord, let your kingdom come in my life. Okay. The kingdom of God is at hand. God, let your kingdom come in my life. Actually be the King of my life. That way we can be the kingdom advancing on this earth. Help me not to just say yes, but to live.

00:23:23:06 – 00:23:57:12
Unknown
Yes. I choose to obey you today. Whatever you ask. Ooh, that’s a big one. In the name of Jesus. Amen. Okay. Before we go, I have a question for you guys. Okay. God’s saying right now. I have something for you to do. I have grapes that need to be harvested. Are you. Can you go work right now?

00:23:57:14 – 00:24:04:01
Unknown
Okay. Now I’m going to ask son to.

00:24:04:04 – 00:24:15:03
Unknown
Are you ready to work? Yes. Okay. Now what? Which son are you going to be?

00:24:15:05 – 00:24:31:10
Unknown
How about son one? How about someone? Just do it? All right. Thank you guys. So much for being good up here. Thank you for being good out there. You’re going to get some snacks over the fellowship hall and some pie. All right. Thank you.

The Kingdom of God was never meant to be a distant idea or an abstract theological concept. In this message, Nick Lucich brings the reality of God’s Kingdom down to earth—right into a room full of kids, grapes, props, and a living parable that mirrors the words of Jesus. Through humor, storytelling, and a hands-on retelling of Matthew 21:28–32, he draws listeners into a deeper understanding of what it means to truly live under the reign of King Jesus.

Nick begins by simplifying the Kingdom: a King who holds dominion, a constitution called the Bible, and a culture defined by peace, love, truth, joy, and holiness. Unlike the world’s system—built on anxiety, performance, popularity, and pressure—the Kingdom of God is established on the unshakable character of the King. Even children can grasp the beauty of a kingdom where freedom replaces fear and joy overcomes despair.

But the Kingdom is not passive. It is advancing, moving, taking territory. And participation requires obedience in real time—not someday, not “when life settles down,” but now. Through a playful reenactment of Jesus’ parable of the two sons, Nick exposes the heart of Kingdom living. One son says “no” but later obeys; the other says “yes” but never lifts a hand. True obedience, Nick emphasizes, is not found in our lips but in our lives.

He illustrates this further with a personal story about training for a race and repeatedly failing to get out of bed for early-morning swim practices. Just like the reluctant swimmer, many believers speak the language of commitment while avoiding the discomfort required to follow through. Yet the Kingdom requires action—discipline, humility, repentance, and the courage to say “yes” with our feet, not just our mouths.

As Nick closes, he brings the message full circle: the Kingdom of God is “at hand”—close, accessible, present. And God is asking His people to work, to serve, to obey, to step into the vineyard today. The question Jesus asked still echoes: Which son will you be?

Discussion Guide

Summary

Nick Lucich teaches on the Kingdom of God through a vivid, interactive retelling of the parable of the two sons in Matthew 21. He explains what the Kingdom is—its King, its culture, its power—and emphasizes that the Kingdom is available “right now.” Obedience, he teaches, is the real marker of Kingdom living. It is not enough to say “yes” with our words while living “no” with our actions. Through a humorous skit and a personal story about failing to follow through on commitment, Nick challenges believers to examine the gap between what they declare and how they live. The Kingdom is advancing, and each believer is invited to step into real obedience today.

Ice-Breaker Questions

  1. What’s something you said yes to in life but procrastinated on—or never did?
  2. When you were a kid, what chore did you avoid the most?
  3. If the Kingdom of God had a “culture playlist,” what songs or values would be on it?

Discussion Questions

  1. Nick explained that a kingdom requires a King and dominion. How does seeing Jesus as King change how you approach your daily decisions?
  2. What parts of the world’s “kingdom” (performance, popularity, pressure, anxiety) do you feel most tempted to live under?
  3. In the parable of the two sons, which son do you relate to more personally—and why?
  4. Why do you think Jesus emphasized obedience over verbal agreement in this passage?
  5. Nick said the Kingdom is advancing and not stagnant. What does that imply for how believers should live?
  6. What “vineyard work” might God be asking you to step into right now?
  7. Nick shared about needing to “repent” and actually start swimming after many false starts. Where might God be calling you to real follow-through in this season?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for inviting us into Your Kingdom—a place of freedom, joy, peace, and truth. Today we ask that You truly be the King of our lives. Help us to not only say “yes” with our words but to live “yes” with our actions. Give us courage to obey, strength to follow through, and clarity to recognize the vineyard work You are calling us into. Let Your Kingdom come in us, and let Your will be done through us.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
